That is correct. The gas tank sits between there so it is very difficult to vent the sub to the passenger compartment without extensive expensive modifications. I did alot of research on subs for these cars. I saw alot of different custom designs. Bottom line is if you want to give away footwell space, the passenger side is a good inexpensive option and will sound well (but your passenger will be squished up if she has long legs). Other than that I just used the Wicked Cas console 10" Sub (see my recent post on RT/10 stereo overhaul). It won't blow your doors off, but it will give you some decent bass and compared to a custom made box from scratch, and will not break the bank either. Plus it looks close to stock.
