How to install a manual fan \"On\" switch with the Roe Racing fan kit....

Hi Everyone,

This topic came up in a post a few days ago. As we understand it, some people would like to be able to turn their fans on manually, at any time. If, for example, you were in traffic and didn't feel comfortable with the engine temperature creeping up, you could turn the fan on before it gets hot enough to come on automatically. We're considering making this an option on the fan kits, much like the timer. Until then, here's a diagram of how to wire it in. The new part is in red.

You'll need: About 3' or 4' of 18 gauge (speaker size) wire, a simple single throw switch (a toggle, push button or rocker switch from Radio shack or an auto parts store), connectors for the switch terminals, a quick tap or splice and a ground (ring) terminal.

You can install the switch anywhere in the car you'd like (might need more wire). Basically, with this manual switch, you'll be energizing the fan kit relay by providing a ground signal. This will turn the fan on and keep it on until you shut it off. If you turn the switch off, the fan kit will still function as intended, cooling the engine after it has been shut off. This will not set any trouble codes.

Sean, if you build a kit that can cut the fan on and off manually with the engine on put me on your list. NO ONE has this yet, but it shouldnt take long now...
I do not have the kit anymore that will cut the fan on when you cut off the car for heat soak but will for sure want a kit for when you are driving or at a stand still.

I do plan on getting the fan kit one day as I can DEFINATELY use it after the car gets shut down...

One comment though... I usually just turn my stock fan on by turning the A/C to the ON position when in traffic if I don't like where the needle is. That cools the engine down to normal operating temp quickly. Am I missing something? Not intended as a flame towards your device

Hi Gerald,
Does your fan run after the A/C has been turned off and the system pressure comes back down (real question, no sarcasm

)? Many moons ago, I used to install air conditioners in new Honda cars, back when they all came over without A/C. From what I can remember, there's a high pressure switch in the A/C system that gives the signal to activate the fan. The purpose being to cool the condenser more and reduce the system pressure. I don't know if the Viper runs the fan all the time after the A/C is turned off, or just until it sees a low enough pressure to shut it off (could be a couple minutes). Anyone know for sure? It doesn't change the fan kit, but it would be nice to know.

Don,
Fax me your fax # and I'll send you a set of directions for the fan kit install. My fax # is 904-733-5479 at the shop. Regarding the JB school, only did one Corvette school (the first). Haven't had time to work with them (as an instructor) since January, but we supply them with some parts still.

Wayne,
If you want a fan kit with the switch, drop me an e-mail and we can set one up for you. If there's interest, we'll make them.

Sean, yes I want one if you can figure it out and I am sure others would also. I sent you an e-mail. Let me know. And thanks for trying to figure it out.

Sean , read my post.... NO, it doesn't stay on after my car is shut off (duh), I said that in my first paragraph...

I'll qoute it

"I do plan on getting the fan kit one day as I can DEFINATELY use it after the car gets shut down..."

Other than that, what is the difference? I"m authentically curious as my needle will dip in the warm zone on these warm florida days. Does turning the A/C on have the same effect? Or will my car cool down quicker with your kit??

Gerald?
Geeez....., I know it doesn't stay on after the car has been shut off

. I was basically asking if you had ever checked to see how long the fan stays on after the A/C was shut off, engine still running. If designed like most are, it (the fan) should just stay on until the A/C system pressure comes down. I'll check it on my car tomorrow.
