That sensor will keep the alternator from overcharging the battery. It also provides a reference signal used by the JTEC if various other sensors or electrical components fail.

not sure, but I think when its unpluged you alt will not be effected, so if the power wire is not connected it will not do anything, but if the wires are shorted it should pop a fuse, is this by chance on the same circuit as you radio?

Update:

This was the charging problem. Once I replaced the battery temperature sensor the charging system worked perfectly!

Note:

Not all of the Battery temperature sensors are the same for all Dodge products. I did a test. I went to the junkyard and picked up one from a Dakota and one from a Durango. I tried both of them. They did work but they did not allow the full charging of battery from the alternator as the one for the viper. The one specifically for the viper allows more charging at a lower RPM.

Here is how my I did my test.
1. I turned my lights and radio on for 5 minutes to drain the battery a bit.
2. I put my battery charger with the built in amp meter on the battery.
3. Plugged in the battery charger. It pegged at 6 amps.
4. I started the car.
5. The amp meter instantly jumped down to 4 amps. This is a indication that the alternator is now putting out juice to the battery. I did not have this drop when this sensor was damaged.

I have been driving the car around for two days now and it is running great! My problem was not the battery after all.

I want to thank every one who replied to this post to help me with this problem. Also I want to thank Chuck Tator for replying to my e-mails.
