Agreed on a price with a guy to buy my Viper.But after spending a couple of days looking at SRT's (sweet ride)I think I like my GTS just as much.......this is going to be a tough phone-call...........

I know that he can not legally force you to sell the car but a deal is a deal. He has already factored a Viper into his plans and has not doubt expressed his excitement about the purchase to his friends and family. He will certainly be disappointed to hear that you have changed your mind. Does he have right to be disappointed ... yep. Do you have a right to change your mind .... yep. Should you stick with deal that you agreed to ... yep.

That is a very classy thing to do. You may actually do business with him one day and that gesture could prove to be very benificial. Best of luck.

This happened to me with a seller of a 01 Sapphire GTS in CO. We agreed on a price, had a gentlemen's agreement, I faxed him a bill of sale, went to the bank to wire the money, arranged shipment and then I received a call at 6:00am and he said that he was going to keep it. I WAS PISSED.

If you put a ad in the paper or classifieds to sell something, THEN SELL IT. Do not waste peoples time and effort and agree on something and then pull out, that is just rude. Sellers should think about this stuff BEFORE they post something for sale and do ALL the research on a new car before NOT after you agree on selling something.

Just my .02 now I feel better...

Not good enough, if you made a deal you need to stick to it. Maybe tell him you made a mistake and ask him what it would take to get out of it.

I have a story that is even better than yours Ledfoot.
About 3 years ago I fell in the love with the 360 Modena, but i always kept talking myself out of one. I just couldnt justify having both a 360 and a Viper. ( You know how it goes, a daughter in college at ST. Marys and a wife who after 19 years of marriage still doesnt think cars are cool. )
Then my wife and I are on vacation in Fort Myers Beach Florida last fall and we run into a gentleman driving a Yellow 360. It was for sale and I had to have it. My wife tells me to go for it!
So I struck a deal with the guy.
I then start advertising to sell my 02 yellow/black stripe GTS. I dont get a lot a calls, but this guy from North Carolina calls me and he has to have my car. He says he has heard of me and my reputation for being totally insane when it comes to taking care of my toys.
We come to terms and make the deal. The wire transfer is all set and I have arranged shipping from Indiana to N.C. The guy calls me the day before the car and money are to exchange and he tells me in order to do the deal, I have to take his Corvette convertible in trade.
I thought I was going to explode.
We then had a long conversation regarding ethics and morale character, which he was obviously void of either.
He changed his home pnone number and I never heard from him again.

The moral of the story: I love my GTS.......I love my GTS.......I love my GTS.......I love my GTS.......I love my GTS.......

I bought a Viper on ebay, or so I thought. It was a private owner, from all appearances just a regular guy, no crook.
I was the high bidder, $35k for a 93 a little over two years ago. It was a fair price. I had emailed back and forth during the auction.
At the end he simply refused to sell. He said, "there weren't enough bids".
I googled a little and found out who he was. An orthopedic surgeon in Virginia. I found out his home phone. I spoke with his wife but he wouldn't talk to me.

By the way, with a little detective work and a slim lead, you can find out quite a bit with google.

Actually, this is the best idea. Who knows, it may be a non-issue. The only way to find out is to explain your change of heart (after all its based on wanting to keep the car, not based on the money) and figure out an equitable withdrawal.

When I bought my '96, I had flown out to see the car and I agreed to buy it on the spot. Two days later (while funds were being transfered) I found the seller on line trying to negotiate a better deal and he was going to leave me hanging. I was unhappy to say the least. I called him on it, and I bought the car. If I had it to do all over again I would kill the deal on principle alone. I'm a believer in doing what you say you will do. Just speak to the buyer and tell him the truth. I'm sure he would appreciate your honesty and you may just part as friends. You may not have to do this legally, but I bet you will sleep much better knowing that you did the right thing.You may even offer to look at any prospective cars for sell in your area so that he has a trained eye looking out for him.JMHO

This would be cool if you could pull it off....

So you've made your deal and you have a pick up and closing all set up with the guy, let's call it deal #1.

You then find him on line trying to make a better deal.

You get to your alternate email address and make a better deal, so good that he is happy with deal #2.

He calls with some excuse and dumps your deal#1

Set up a closing for deal #2. When you get there act like you are making the original deal #1.
He balks thinking you are party #2. Of course, you are both.

Say, "oh yeah, I forgot", pull out your phone call him while he's standing right there, and make some excuse to cancel deal #2.

Hang up, then call him right back and ask him if deal #1 is still available.

It should be up to the buyer as to whether you can be released. When I make a deal, I give my word. I try and stick to it, even if I've changed my mind. Most people are understanding, and if you compensate for their time and expenses, they will understand.

I am interested in what the Buyer has said?
He might be OK, with it. You never know, until you discuss it with him! Unless you gave him a once in a lifetime deal, he may be understanding(and pissed of course!).

I spoke with my buyer on Sunday morning.although dissapointed,he was understanding of my situation and expressed no ill will(this guy is all class)I told him I'd keep my eye open for a similar car,mailed him a gift(he turned down my offer of a box of cuban cigars)and we parted friendly...........low milage,sapphire,GTS,if you hear of one let me know.......thanks Dave
