Had the same thing happen to me several years ago. Oversized custom door (I keep thinking 20' wide) that was original to the house. Had driving rains the night before. Pulled the cars out to squeegee the water out around the garage door lip. As I got out of the second car the whole door split apart and crashed down - soaked with water on cheap wood and particle board. Shuddered to think what would have happened to my cars or anybody in the family that was there. It was my Toyota phase, so it would only have damaged my LS 400 and Previa... No plans to upgrade my wife and kids, so I considered myself very lucky.

Be sure to check those older doors!

Funny you should mention that... Ever since my garage was built (3 years ago) I would notice an occasional 1/4-20 nut lying loose on the floor in one of the bays. Never thought much of it. Well, two weeks ago, the dorr to the Caravan bay stopped coming all the way down. The ensuing investigation revealed that the mounting nuts to the opener mechanism had come loose, with half of them off. I found no flat or lock washers on the remaining ones, so I began a check of all the other nuts that hold the multi=panel door to each other. None had any sort of washer, and 7 (out of 40) had missing nuts. The pickup & Viper doors were in a similar state. The contractor apparently did not believe in using flats or splits, even though ovals holes are used on every hinge & bracket. Grrr...

Kevin,

I replaced my doors before receiving my first viper, but for different reasons. I had the wooden hinged doors that swing out and up and they were in perfect condition, but I replaced them with roll-up doors. It would only have taken one time with the Viper parked in the driveway and that door opening up into the front of the car, can you say "grounds for divorce?" I don't know if these doors are as common on the east coast because of the elements.
