After many hours of reading posted threads and some deliberation, decided to improve the "mambe" exhaust note of my SRT-10.
By removing the, so called "secondary cats", and stock mufflers I was able to increase the db level, at idle, by 23db which also improved the exhaust note to a great mellow pulsing.
The cruising sound was also improved to a similar mellow note whith out impairing listening abilities to the radio or passenger.
Several attempts to get the db increase at full throttle were unsuccessful do to tire and road noise, take note: you won't hear the radio or your passenger very well at WOT.
A Very Trusted Friend then was allowed to drive the SRT at full throttle, to allow me to hear what others will....They will definitely hear you coming and going. :2tu:

2 1/2 hrs. of my labor, $150. parts/shipping, and Skip White At White Performance & Automotive, she sounds GRRRRRate. :2tu:

Thanks Skip.....

(2) 4" round Approximately 18" long stainless mufflers #Bul 416 purchased from White Performance Automotive were used.
The 2/1/2" Stainless pipe & band clamps were purchased locally.

Also it reduced the previous sill heat, due to the shorter mufflers. :smirk:

Did you remove the crossover and if so what did you use for exhaust tips and how did you mount them? What did you attach to the primary cat after you removed the secondary cat, a pipe or the new muffler? Did you attach the muffler up close to the cat or downstream neat the exhaust tips? How did you handle the bends? Did the skip white pipes bolt directly on or did you need to fabricate? Sorry for all the questions but I have been looking for a low cost way to improove the sound, performance, and reduce the heat without breaking the bank.

Do what he did, leave the crossover. Cheep and inexpencive!

Seriously: There are quite a few threads about this subject, just do a search. Some people think straight pipes are too loud, I love 'em!

Atro,
Cut the secondary cat rite at the factory weld.
Placed the Stainless muffler, from Skip, at that point.
Felt that (1. mig welding stainless muffler there would keep what ever heat gererated close to the main cat for it to work properly and (2. keep heat forward under the sill away from your legs on egress of the vehicle.

Placed band clamps on rear of muffler to approximately 22" stainless pipe.
Then band clamped to existing cross over at old stock muffler connection with the factory clamp that remained...that allowes for minor adjustments of tip to sill opening clearance.

For this vehicle, sliding the cross over hanger all the way forward ( to the front) allowed the clearance necessary. ( So the tips don't melt the sill opening) :2tu:

I personally didn't care for the sound/(tone) of vehicle with no cross overs or it being that much louder. The heat generated from the cross overs appears to be nominal. (my opinion)

As I've said in several previous posts, leaving the X-over on will sound better overall, and make the upgrade very simple. The car will sound so much better doing what Doc has done.

There are benifits to removing the x-over, but there will be more noise, and a bit of drone, not to mention the exhaust pulse is not as nice.

I will allways remove the x-over on my SRTs but this is for other reosons. Very aggresive tone, and somewhat muddy sound.

My new number is 423-288-3881 in anyone wants to order a set of Stainless Bullet mufflers.

Skip knows more than anyone about this upgrade. It is the first one to do, and rocks (except for me failing emissions due to the codes the O2s throw, but who cares!)

Agh, forgot the results!

Sounds great, stock got crappy at 25, this gets crappy starting at 35. A lot more mid, and very much more "bright" (must be from redundant tweeters). I had to lower the treble a tad, overall great upgrade for $80.

I just removed the mufflers and replaced with straight pipe like Viperfreak did. I don't find the exhaust too loud. Total cost was $40. For those interested in this approach, search the archives. Viperfreak had a great post, with pics, telling just how to do it. Have fun!

The sec. cats is where the restriction not to mention backing up heat into the primary cat. I think the car would sound better with a shorter muffler than none at all. If you are not removing the sec. cat, and replacing the muffler with a straight pipe, this is why the car is not to loud, as the sec. cat acts as a silencer.
