Insurance for us \"under 25\" guys

Ok, i'm nearing the point where I can finaly pick up my dream car... a GTS coupe. I figure 6 months from now everything will be in place to break out the cash for a GTS coupe.

The problem I ran into today was insurance. I'm under 25 and single (untill next year). I tried a few insurance companies today... their quotes floored me! Avg 4-5K every 6 months! UGG!!! 10 grand a year just for insurance? Jesus friggin christ! Is there any company out there who is reasonable, or am I just pretty much screwed when it comes to insurance? I can afford the car and maintanence.. but not an extra 800$ a month on top of all of it... not yet atleast (hehe..)

Re: Insurance for us \"under 25\" guys

I got a deal with State Farm for nearly maximum coverage for $500 for 6 months. The other 6 months will be $80 because I will just store it.

I am single, 24yrs. old male.

PS> my last ticket was 85mph in a 45mph- straight to court, got a lawyer ($$$), got off. No ticket, not classes, nothing.

Shop around.

Re: Insurance for us \"under 25\" guys

hey Bro, I feel your pain..

I'm 31 single and had my first viper at about 28 or 29.
I stayed with the co. I'm currently with for over 15 years. Since I've been a good customer they put me in some special class. I also took a safe driver course, told them I work at home and won't drive the car to and from work everyday, told them it has a security system, and asked for a 1k deductable etc. 4-5k a year is a joke. I pay just under $700 a year w/ Allstate.

I'm sure with a couple calls, you can easily cut that figure by 50 to 75%.... Let us know what happens!

Re: Insurance for us \"under 25\" guys

I'm 29 and should be receiving my '00 GTS this week. My insurance carrier quoted me $267.00 per month and I'm not much older than you, thus your figure truly does seem inflated. If you have a clean record and have been driving since you were 16 there should be no sur-charges added to the base premium. The numbers of years that you've been driving and the history of accidents or lack thereof are what form the basis for the monthly premium. I used the following in my favor:

(1) I adjusted the deductable amount to bring the monthly premium to a respectable level.

(2) My annual mileage is estimated at a low 4000 miles = less driving means the odds are slim that the insurance provider will ever make a claim payout; its all statistics!

(3) The car is secured in a fully enclosed garage.

(4) There is a theft-deterrant device installed on the car

You should be able to find better rates if you adjust the coverage levels. You have time to shop around, thus search on the Net for a National provider and call a few local providers too. Good Luck!

I'll continue to shop around. I just about droped the phone when she quoted that!

Progressive is obviously not a good choice. I'll call my current insurance holder (USAA) and state farm next.

Thanks guys

I'm 23 and I pay just over $100/month with Nationwide for, I believe 100K/300K coverage with a $500 deductable. This is half what Mercury wanted to charge me. Give them a call. BTW, I'm single, no tickets, no accidents.

My only comment is that when I was in my 20s I was driving a Chevy Monza that was a family heirloom. I often wonder what these cars would have done for my social life in the early 80s. I'm jealous!!

One of the few good things about growing old is that your insurance rates drop.

I am 33 and pay about $1,300 a year for full coverage. Seems some younger people here are getting better rates than me, but I guess this is Detroit that I live in.

Just as a point of reference: I have a '94 RT/10 and I am 32, single, no tickets/accidents and I've been with the same company (GuideOne) since I was 16. I pay $950 per year for the $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury coverage. I have a $1,000 deductible.

Hey MadMaxx, definitely check with USAA, that's who I use (I'm 29). While I was preparing to buy my viper, I got a quote from them for the viper and my mustang gt guestimating 10k miles each a year, with no tix, they said ~$900/6months with $500 deductible. Well, they then applied 3 tix in the past two years to my ins rate (they had them in the system, but not for ins rates?!), which led to ~$1300/6months, still not bad at all given the driving record.

I'll get on the phone with USAA today. I've got a clean record, driving schools, and have been w/ usaa for 5 years (family for almost 15).

I got a quote about 2 weeks ago for a 95' RT I was planning on purchasing. All my insurance is though State Farm and they quoted me 86 bucks per month for full coverage. I told them I would only be driving it like 500 miles a month. I thought this was the best quote I have got so far and I'm only 22. So try State Farm.

I'm 25 years old and own a 97 gts, I pay $80.00 per month through state farm. Don't let them scare you, negotiate with them, they are also salesmen.

Yellowsnake, I think I saw you at the car wash on golf in schaumburg, I pulled up as you were leaving.
See you around.
