On a related note, I have been playing with using SS woven cloth for use as an air filter. One question I have run into is what the desired particle filtration size is. In other words, what size of particle starts to cause trouble for the engine. I have not been able to find any info on this. Looks like the K&N in the picture passes anything smaller than about 250 - 500 micron. Anyone know more about this?

Very interesting. Just a few questions:

1.How does that compare to OEM or S&B?

2.Is that photo taken with or without oil on the filter?

3.Wouldn't oil on the filter reduce the filtration size?

Thanks for posting.

Dave;

Excellent questions and will try to answer.

My concern with cotton media type filters has always been the size and quantity of holes you see when you hold them up to light. Nothing scientific, just a concern based on logic. This picture helps to document the size of those holes somewhat. Perhaps (hopefully) the oil more than compensates.

Ken;

Mobil says that anything less than 10 ~ 15 microns (in the oiling system) has little or no adverse affect on engine life.
