Is 30,000miles high for a \'01?

I'm trying my best to locate a '01 Saphire Blue/ silver stipe GTS w/ cognac interior. I'm either finding ridiculous prices like $62K for 18K miles or it has black interior or no stripes.

I've found one w/ cognac and price is resasonable and is "certified" at the dealer. Only problem is that has no stripes and has 30K miles. I'd much rather find a car with less than 20K on the clock.

What would be the "cut-off" as for as mileage goes when buying a Viper?

Whaaa? That's only 6k miles a year, 500 miles a month average, how could that be high?! Plus, there is no such thing as a cutoff, it all depends on the vehicle's maintenance. I sold my 98 Viper recently with 85k miles on it, and it runs hard and fine for the current owner.

NO stripes? You can always add them!. Very inexpensive for vinyle stripes and it looks awesome. I added metallic silver stripes to my RT/10. 30K dosent sound to crazy , i have a 99 RT/10 and i have 24,000.

I don't think mileage is an issue for ownership, but it is a good negotiating tool for getting the price lowered. IMO

Well I guess I'm just used to The Italians. Anything over 20,000 on a Ferrari/Lamborghini is considered "High Mileage" but American engines especially Big Blocks tend to go longer/take more abuse before a rebuild.

I have about 27K on my '01. When looking at Vipers, their condition seems to have less to do with the number of miles on the odometer and more to do with how they were treated in general. Personally, I'd take a higher mileage well maintained cruiser that racked up some mileage on road trips over a lower mileage car that has seen a lot of track use or only taken out on the weekends and beat on and put away wet.

This is a tough question, but it does have a two-fold answer. Your question about whether 30,000 miles is too much for a 2001 ,can be interpreted to be a concern about how far the car will go , mileage wise. We have numerous customers who have gone 60,70, and 80,000 miles, and the car has all the rational in the World to exceed 100,000 miles and beyond. Concerning the other way the question could be viewed , yes, 30,000 miles is quite a few for the normal 2001 and it will affect the price. Whether we like it or not, the Viper is a mileage sensitive car based on it's low volume numbers ( like a Ferrari ) and since so many are driven a few miles every year, those that are driven more (like an everyday car) do suffer on the resale side. You are also looking for the Holy Grail , as I know we never ordered Blue with Connelly and stripes ( not sure you could in 2001 ), but with only around 76 total Connelly leather cars it would be a bear to find one of any nature.

30,000 is very high on any car. i am guessing that everything is totally worn out and the car is in need a full rotisserie restoration. be sure to check all the lower quarter panels thoroughly for rust and bondo.

how you Americans can continue to ********** yourself driving high-mileage cars like this is beyond me.

I'm with Tom. I average between 10 and 12,000 miles per year. 59,000 now. I have never understood the mentality of what constitutes a high miler for a Viper. I tracked my 1990 SHO last year at Putnam Park in 100 degree heat and 154,000 miles on the clock all day long. Never missed a beat. It's our daily driver. Heck, one of the guys at Putnam last year had over 400,000 miles on his engine and it's never been apart. Why shouldn't a well maintained Viper engine be capable of the same?

On the flip side, this mentality is good---because there will always be a supply of garage queens out there with very low miles if I decide to ever get another one.

To answer the question: IMO, 30,000 miles is absolutely nothing if it's been well maintained........even better....because of this accepted mileage misconception, you should be able to a get a heck of a deal on it. Any other regular car you would pay an adder for low mileage.

30k is low if treated well. The real question is how long do you intend to keep it? If you keep the car till 100k or more miles, then you had 70k more quality Vipering miles than the first owner that paid full price + gas guzzler tax.

Keep this in mind: OEMs have to certify emissions for 100,000 miles, so any "normal" wear and tear cannot be aloud to affect emissions for that long. I would say that means the engine is intended to behave nearly like new for 100,000 miles.

We're past the old days when 100,000 was phenomenal; once the carburetor was retired fuel dilution, running rich, chokes, pumping the pedal, preheating the air, ineffective vacuum diaphrams, and all the other gizmos that didn't work and dumped fuel into the oil are gone! Lifetimes are beyond the 150,000 mile mark. The joke while at the big bad oil company was that most cars are driven to the junk yard...

Bill is correct, they didn't produce a Sapphire with stripes and Connelly leather. You'll have to settle for vinyl aftermarket stripes. No biggie.

I've never really understood the "use" issue. If you're buying a car as an investment, then you should keep it under cover in your garage. DON'T buy a high mileage car. If you're buying a car for the enjoyment of driving it, then DRIVE the car. Save some cash and buy a well maintained car that HAS 30-50G's of miles. Use the saved cash for customizing the USE value of the car.

Trying to combine both forms of ownership, IMO, makes no sense. Decide what you want (investment or use) and make your decision. Striving to achieve compromise will severely diminish your enjoyment car both as an investment and as a driving pleasure.

i would almost rather buy a car that has been driven and maintained than a time capsule car. if it has been driven and maintained any latent or manufacturing/parts defects will surface and more than likely be fixed. cars that have sat or are rarely used will have things break from lack or use or lack of maintainence. my '03 has 22,000 miles and is serviced regularly with all scheduled maintainence done.

Good points. Plus a higher mileage car might actually be newer:Failed or worn out parts will probably have been replaced with newer and improved OEM parts. Just a guess...there's also the myth however that OEM replacement parts aren't as good as the originals that came from the factory...something to do with companies making their money and profit from parts rather than the car itself.

One of those urban legends perhaps?

I have 2,560 very easy miles on my '01 Sapphire/Silver GTS. It's a black interior car, and it would probably go to a new owner for $62K.

Sometimes I wish I would have bought a less expensive high mileage car for my first Viper - But I'm a sucker for low mileage, rare, and collectable.

This mileage thing bothers me sometimes. I bought my 99 rt/10 a year ago to date with 5,800 miles on it and I love to drive the car and I'm currently about ready to roll over to 10,000mi. Man I love driving it and when I do I usually put 100-200 on at a time, but lately i've been getting a bad feeling every time I put more miles on the rt. Any one else feel this way, A WIN for being able to drive this beast, But I feel A LOSE after putting the miles on, OR maybe I'm just a F#$KEN weirdo

Seems like 5k and 10k are the "magic" "the price falls off" numbers so 30k ought to be a "cheap" Viper.

Mine had 1500 when I bought it (and paid a low mileage Viper price)but that is what I was looking for and would accept no substitute......and that was 1k too many! LOL!!!!

Just depends on the care of the vehicle. If the car is in good condition and the only thing that tells there are 30K miles on the car is the clock, why not buy it? Still looks just as good.
