I'm not in either trade, but I would guess that a stockbroker has a little different overhead and cost of doing business than a dealership.

I used to remember quite well how a dealer makes their money - a friend of mine used to sell cars for over 15 years.

New cars:

1) Dealer does not put up the money for the new cars, the bank does.

2) New cars sales are not meant to produce profits. They are intended to get market share. Sort of like the Drug Pusher part of the business.

Used Cars:

1) Dealer puts up his money for these - that's why they don't like having high end used cars on the lot.

2) They tend to make profits on the used cars.

Service:

This is where the real profits come from. This is sort of like the hospital and rehab that deals with the people after they get sick from doing drugs.

I think there is a disconnect or those who are not interested in SRT10's are just stirring the ***.

RT's and GTS's were selling (the Volume Viper dealers) at or below the deals with Cert..'s. The Cert. program keep the dealers competitive and made spread the order distribution over more dealers.

So if a dealer can sell all his new cars for no profit, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, there is Hold Back which is a profit that rarely gets into the equation at the Invoice level. A dealer can still sell under his "dealer cost" and make a profit from the Hold Back.

I believe that there's quite a disparity between "Dealer Invoice" and actual "Dealer Cost." "Hold Back" is only a part of the difference. I saw a figure on the dealer's paperwork when I bought my GTS that made me believe this rather firmly.
