Just out of curiousity...Why is it that pretty much no one uses nitrous on our cars?

I was just kind of wondering. It's a tempting thing for me to battle constantly!...Not really, waiting on a paxton, but still. I'm surprised so few have chosen to do so!

filling up the bottle becomes a drag....getting caught without nitrous is a drag. Other than that, it's all good:drive:

Lots and lots of NOS Vipers around. The big engines really respond well to the nos.

Cheap and easy HP. Just be careful not to go overboard.

I believe that more viper owners can afford to invest 10-15k in power upgrades like a supercharger or head/cam work. The #'s prove that nos works well. It comes down to what your wallet will allow.:)

There are ups and downs when comparing Nitrous to other power upgrades. If you dont want that extra power, just turn the Nitrous off and you are back to your NA power. It is the cheapest and easiest way to add instant horsepower to your Car in the short run. In the long run though filling up the bottles will add up the $$. There is a lot of misconceptions about Nitrous that scare people away like it blowing up engines, etc. [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I think that is the biggest reason people steer away from the juice. Nitrous in and of itself cannot "blowup" an engine. Nitrous kits of poor design, poor quality, and improper air/fuel ratios damage engines. You need to make sure the tune is dead on and you should have no problems if you dont over do the HP rating that your engine can normally handle in its NA form. People blow stuff up when they try to run to large of a shot that their engine cannot normally handle. The SRT's can handle pretty safely a 150 shot, some even push a 200 and have no problems. Another benefit of Nitrous over Forced induction is Nitrous wont cause heat soak. In fact Nitrous can cool the engine while blowers and turbos can overheat your under hood temps. Its all in how you want to use the power.

I went with a Paxton over NOS for a few reasons. I didnt want to always be filling up the bottle. The way I drive, Id be at the speed shop filling up bottles every day. When I press the gas hard the power of the Paxton is there. If I want to drive normal, its like the blower isnt even there. I didnt want to take up trunk space. Its not often I fill trunk, but once in awhile I take Viper on a road trip. Its hard enough to get a couple bags in there. Or other day, was at the mall , my fiance and I ended up buying more then we thought. I had the trunk packed full of bags. A big NOS bottle would take up half the trunk.

I'll leave the NOS to the import crowd, Id rather pop hood and see a Paxton. It might cost a little more, but I think its the better way to have more consistent power ALL the time.

I may eventually change to a SC or Twin turbos. Haven t been able to drive the Car much to enjoy it as it is anyway. I was having to fill the bottles up quite often when I was driving it. We will see. I do enjoy the instant hit of Nitrous though. dont have lag to deal with compared to Forced induction. either way you go they are fun. I have a turbo'd Camaro that will be a blast to drive as it got finished not too long ago.

So why not do twin turbos and nitrous?

Because what in the hell would we all do if you slowed down the rotation of the earth by launching in the wrong direction? I mean, changing seasons... thats fine. But having a 22 hour day or something? Man, that would screw up everything!

Here's where I'm coming from... For $2k, you can have a nice power adder for cheap--N20. For $10k +/- you can have 650rwhp on all the time. But for $15k, you can sell the Gen III, pick up a Gen II, send it to UGR and have 850+rwhp. I just wish the Gen III's had forged internals. What I'm afraid of is getting bored sooner than later w/the paxton and then I'm in deeper and deeper if I go w/a built motor. And I ask myself if I want that much power out of a convertible(800+rwhp). After having both N20 and a blower on my last vette, I'm definitely spoiled to boost! Nothing better than having a 200shot of N20 on all the time! Or in the vette's case, a 300 shot! But going to a gen II for more "cheaper" power I hear is a tough thing to do according to Kevin at UGR. He said I probably wouldn't be satisfied w/a 12 yr. old car w/older technology such as the brakes etc. I had intentions of road racing my viper like I have vipers past, but this one is so clean I'm afraid to tear it up. So really it's just a weekend warrior and grocery getter! So what it boils down to is Gen II w/800+rwhp, or a Gen III w/650+/-rwhp...I've never owned a Gen II, so everyone's input is welcomed and appreciated. My N20 question was just to get peoples opinions on it. Not really much of a thought...Thanks--Andy

In all seriousness its hard enough to get traction with twin turbos, let alone with Nitrous on top of that. If you say put a 50 shot of nitrous on top of forced induction, you get significant gains, probably around 100+rwhp, more than the 50rwhp thats for sure. Nitrous could help with the lag issues that larger turbos may have. A lot of single large turbo cars use them so when they are waiting for the boost to build up, they use nitrous down low. By the time the boost hits, they are already hitting it hard. It also can act as cooling the air therefore heat soak will not be as much an issue. Most people with Twin Turbos Vipers just dont need it, they have a hard enough time keeping the power to the ground, they would never get the chance to use the Nitrous.

only problem is really the bottle filling. and that you will definetely want MORE power later. trust me on this one... just go straight to the paxton and be done with it.

but nitrous is fun and relatively safe.

Re: Just out of curiousity...Why is it that pretty much no one uses nitrous on our ca

Like mentioned. Bottle filling is the only draw back. I plan on going boosted later on, but I cant afford to drop the 15k or so needed for the blower setup, fuel system, engine management etc.

So I'm going to slowly build it up over time buy buying it in pieces and using what I can. Next purchas for me is an AEM. Then I'll upgrade the fuel system. Then maybe by then I can go boosted.
