I just had the cats removed Saturday, and since then I've tested it from a roll to see what gains it's made on acceleration etc... very nice! no problems so far.... well, tonight.... I had it idleing in front of the guys in neutral and rev'd it up like 3 good rips... to show'em what the new exhaust sounded like.... well I'm done, and I leave....and that's when I noticed the light on now. I'm ASSUMING that's what triped the light? and is there a quick fix, disc the battery for a bit? thanks for the $.02 fellas.

Well disconnecting the battery will clear the code but will not "fix" the issue. If it lit once it will probably light again. Get it scanned before clearing the code to see what the code is, could be unrelated to the exhaust.

look like 5 posts down there are some 02 sims for sale, most 96,97 dont throw codes when you yank the cats but chances are your pcm has been replaced with a newer year and thats why you are throwing codes.

I was suggested to disc the positive on the batt for a couple minutes, put it back then drive it as normal..... and IF the light comes back.... then I should take actions.... so I'll let you know about the sims. Thanks guys.

I am exactly that type of person, I actually didn't even want to start it! after that damn light came on.... but I spoke with Ted May today at Valaya Racing... he gave me that advise... he said a scan right now wouldn't be necessary.... he said that by me reving like a mad man probably spooked the car.... and that if the light comes back on after reset, then I'll have to bring it down for a diagnosis.

Not to argue with Ted, but disconnecting the battery clears the light and the learned settings. Your car will run terrible while it re-learns, and it'll take a few drive cycles after it re-learns before it announces if there is a problem.

Clear the light with a scanner rather than disconnecting the battery, then it's only a few drive cycles before it trips the light again, no re-learn. Plus you can get the codes of the initial complaint from the computer.

That is the most ******* thing i have ever heard....seriously. How the hell do you ***** a car into throwing a code. If thats the case my light would always be on. Do yourself a favor and buy the 02 sims, clear your code and call it a day. This is a very simple problem.

I would have never believed it either, but it happened to my car. I cleared the code with an OBDII scanner, and the problem never came back. Weird.

I'm assuming you mean buy a scanner and clear the code? I'm not sure sims would do anything on a 96/97 GTS, as I thought the rear O2 sensors were not connected to the Check Engine light.

The scanner I bought connects to my laptop: www.obd-2.com. I bought the tri-band model, which reads almost every type of vehicle on the road. I like it better than a regular scanner, because it allows you to do much more with the readings and gauges. Have I used all the features? No, but I might one day :)

Thats odd for sure. On a 96 or 97 the 02 will throw a code if the pcm has ever been replaced with a newer one. Sometimes they go bad and you bring the car in to your dealer and they put the same one thats in a 01 or a 02 in there. Which will throw a code for no cats. Of course he will need to clear the code after he puts in the sims.It wont go off until its been cleared.
