Just picked up my 03 from K&N's in Riverside. They said they tried out lots of designs, but the best results came from a Y tube with dual K&N Extreme filters. (those are the ones with the extra filter material on the tops),
They used the stock airbox, and replaced the snorkle and it's sound resonation cavity. Also removed the corrugated tunnel leading into the throttle body and replaced it with smooth tube.
The prototype was all metal, but they will be making the production units out of blow molded plastic.
They asked me be sure that since this is just a prototype, the production results may vary.

Results from the prototype
Stock HP 444 Stock Torque 480
K&N HP 458 K&N Torque 492

The got better results with their prototype than with no filters at all in the stock configuration.
The "downside" is that there will probably be more intake noise at full throttle than with stock.
This will be a sleeper enhancement. The airbox will remain stock, with only the filters, and intake Y tube changed.

They will begin to produce these in a few months. Be in stores before Christmas.
If I can get one before Coronado, I'll bring it to the event.

This is the same K&N that claimed almost 20hp from their airbox for my truck. Actual numbers were 4, but hey who is counting.

Good results.

BTW Craig - the joke is the Tornado actually works on some vehicles - it was the only way I managed to get correct readings to my MAP sensor after changing the intake on my Skyline turbo. The alternatives ranged from trial and error moving of the map sensor, refitting the stock air box to a custom intake. The swirl effect did the trick for a lot less money and effort - 10 minutes! They have a place. That better air enabled me to go from 11lb to 14lb boost

Wow I thought it was just a joke product. So what did it do for you? Give you a better fuel/air mixture?

BTW got any pics of your skyline? I love those cars. Which one do you have R32, R33 or R34?

Hmmm, tasty. I doubt it'll pick up 14 HP, but I'd love to try one on our DC stage I SRT (ported heads, lifters, otherwise stock). Any chance of getting my hands on a prototype?

K&N was being very conservative when they showed me the dyno results. This was not a marketing group, but the guys down in the shop. They are arranging to test their prototype on another SRT to make sure mine was not a fluke.
We will not know for certain what the average results will be, however I am very encouraged.

Getting you a prototype would not do any good, as what really matters is the results on the production model. They did not want to spend the money on producing a system unless it perform well on at least 2 cars.

I am sure DC will do their own evaluation on any production units prior to recommending it to their customers.
My fingers are crossed that this will provide some inexpensive, simple extra umph for our cars.

I will take my car back when they have a production unit, and observe the dyno pulls if possible.

I just returned from K&N as well. They used my 2003 for test back up with Paul's car. I came in with 445.3hp and they confirmed the increase with the new system against Paul's car. Looks like a winner for us. I did not get the tq numbers. Hopefully the system will be out soon.

Leonard - was the 445HP before or after the K&N system was added? Did your car see the same increase as on Paul's car?

He said he came in with 445hp so it looks like the numbers are before the K&N..

Leonard...Thats not fair. Your stock SRT puts out a whopping 445 hp, while mine only dyno'd a measly 444. What is your secret to obtaining the additional HP!.
Kidding aside, thanks for taking the time to bring your car into K&N.
They will now begin to make a production version, which will be available to all owners.
They will again dyno some cars for before and after results on production units.
Should be available before Christmas. :usa:

The 445.3 was before the new K&N setup. They told me that my numbers with the new system backed up the numbers on Paul's but I did not get a copy of the dyno run. Mine was run in 4th gear for some reason and I did not have a chance to ask why. Also it was on a graph showing speed and NOT rpm. I don't know if they do it this way all the time. They were doing the dyno tests for the Ultimate Street Car series so they were quite busy. There was a 96 or 97 GTS there that was supposed to have something like 900hp? I did not get to see the dyno pull on that one but there was an eclipse that did 656hp with nitrous.

Some amazing machinery.
