Funny thing is that the airbags never deployed. Did anyone else pick up on that?

The repair cost of $10,000 appears quite reasonable. If this was a GENII it would have been $2ok+- for the hood alone. The redesign is a great improvement in this regard!!

$10,000 seams quite reasonable. Why the dealership is involved is interesting? I wonder if it was a test drive or an employee?

Agreed - seems to be an air bag failure to deploy. Hard to imagine that the frame could get bent without the airbags deploying - even with the soft frame the Viper uses.

If you read the information carefully on the Ebay site, you will see that it is a "SALVAGE" title. The car was totalled by the insurance company. The entire front fascia with lihghts, etc., both front fenders, and everything infront of the engine are damaged or gone. My guess would be that the engine may also have damage from the impact. It is not clear whether or not the air bags deployed. It is possible that they were just cut off and the plastic closed up. The passenger side really does not show well. The car should be parted out.

$50K for a wrecked Viper that still needs an additional $10K to fix (don't forget Viper tax). Was it $10K in PARTS, or did that include the body shop bill too? You now have $60K (at least) in the car and it has a salvage title; that's NOT a good deal. Dealerships are dropping $10K off the price of a new one, and would probably come off even more if you're serious.

Would you want to be on the track going over 100 mph in a car that has had the frame repaired? I would think the warrantee alone would be worth the difference.

I almost did the same thing....

I get home from the dealer and take the GF for a ride. Shifting from 2-3 with that HORRIBLE shifter I ended up shifting 2-1st!!!

I had the median wall on my left, traffic on the right... Car was fishtailing like crazy, after the 3rd or 4th swing I completely recovered control. It was a miracle (and good driving) that saved me.

next day ordered the Hurst, and lived happily ever after!!!

Cheers!

Not to change the topic of the post, but could you tell me a little more about the Hurst shifter? I also don't like the stock shifter and am looking at alternatives.

Maybe on a convertible but not on a new coupe unless its a demonstrator. The bottom line is that the red coupe was clearly and visibly totalled. I hope that the driver and any other cars and people that were in the vicinity of the driver did better. Unfortunately for the rest of us, there are people out there with enough money to buy a Viper but not enough experience to drive one safely.

I forgot to mention up there that of course I was shifting at redline...

Anyway. Yes, the Hurst is great! not easy to install, since you need to drill out the rivets that hold the stock tranny-tunnel boot, and you need to drill the tranny tunnel to reach the bolts.

But definitely worth the effort!!! BTW, you will need a new shift-knob.

B&M also makes a shifter for the SRT. Both are good brands, Ive owned both of them and like them as well. I just found a great deal on the Hurst (don't ask me how much, it's been a while) and of course, installed it myself.

I had a B&M in my 996 Carrera and it was the absolute best feeling shifter I have ever tried in my life, PERIOD.

Cheers.

I too almost became a 1st day wreck victim. I gassed it coming out of a turn and even though my wheels were straight, the tires broke loose and spun and almost caused me to loose the rearend. Luckily it was noone in the lane beside me or I would've probably side swiped them

From the Ebay auction: "IT WOULD BE REPAIRED INSTEAD OF TOTALED IF THIS HAD NOT BEEN BRAND NEW AND THE OWNER DID NOT WANT IT REPAIRED."

If someone JUST bought a new Viper and wrecked it on the way home, I think most people would rather see it totalled and buy a new one more than already having the hassle of the repair and a salvage title before they even got a full day of enjoyment

Only if you look hard enough. Very few dealers are selling their new Coupes for Invoice, but they are out there and it is possible to get $10K off but it is more easily found with convertibles.

The MSRP of the new coupe in black without stripes and with the five spoke wheels is $87,695.00. This price includes gas guzzler tax and destination charge. I would be interested in knowing where you saw the same Viper for sale for $$77,695 including gas guzzler tax and destination charge. I am aware of the fact that there are discounts being offered on the coupes. I am not aware of any new, unused ones being discounted by as much as you suggest.

Sorry to take away from the F355 vs. Gen 3 owners love fest (again), but I vote breakaway guard rail.

Back to our regularly scheduled program.
