Local car guy was pushing for viper owners to use Mobil 1 5w 30 over 10w 30. Is it a good idea? Any thoughts? Thanks

Well 2004s call for 5w30 if operating from 32 degrees and below and 10w40 for 0 degrees and higher. 2005-2006s call for 0w40 synthetic preferred for all temperatures. It also states that 5w40 can be used for -20 degrees and higher. I found the values on the operators manuals listed on Dodge.com.

Flexx91 is correct, but it is good to use for all years. Someone is pushing 5-30W only because they got a deal on some, I would imagine.

Go with 0-40W and no sweat.

We could only get Royal Purple XPR 10-40...(Extreme Performance & Racing Motor Oil), stock number 01041...we have found cooler temps using this oil...really don't think it's recommended however!! (probably also discounts the warranty should anything happen to the engine), and yes, it's synthetic, and no, we don't track the car. Probably should be going with manufacturer's recommendation as Bill Pemberton said, 0-40 Mobil 1. Live and Learn, right?!! ~juli~

The "30" indicates the viscosity when the oil is at 100C. The 5W or 10W predicts how the oil will flow at -35C or-40C. Your engine will not know the difference when the oil is warmed up and only tell the difference when you start it at the North Pole.

Mobil 1 10-30 in everything for me and it's been great.

Who's going to open the "Best Oil filter" can of worms so I can see that oil filter study for the umteenth time?

First off 10w-30 Mobil 1 is the factory fill for 2003. I tried using 5w-30 and started to have some oil blow by.

Second I have been running Royal Purple 10W-30 oil for 20,000 miles with zero oil usage and zero problems. You need to call Royal Purple to confirm their crossover lubricant as their web site and catalog crossover application charts are not correct.

Part numbers are as follows for a 2003 Viper only:

01520 MOTOR OIL, 5W-20
01530 MOTOR OIL, 5W-30
01130 MOTOR OIL, 10W-30

I also use their products in my transmission and rear axle and have found that both run cooler and quieter.

Part numbers are as follows for a 2003 Viper only:

01301 ****-GEAR REAR DIFFERENTIAL LUBE, 75W-140

01512 SYNCHROMAX TRANSMISSION LUBE

Racer Robbie: I contacted the owner of Royal Purple to make sure that the XPR, part #01041 for our 2005 has the correct ingredients in their oil as Mobil 1, and they more than exceed specs. We also run the coolant from Royal Purple. We've found as you have, the engine runs MUCH cooler and efficiently. That's our experience, and you are right the 2003 and 2005 use different products. Thanx for your input! ~juli~
