My 96 GTS w/ roe sc is showing service engine light #505 (idle control system malfunction) I pulled the idle sensor apart to check for dirt or moisture. It was clean. Is there any way to check the sensor to see if it is good?

The idle is erratic at times. It will fluctuate between 200-1000 rpm,and at times it will stall when coming to a stop. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

I would start with a "Field Dump' Disconnect the positive battery cable and ground it out against the battery hold down bolt. Reconnect it, turn the key on (do not start) and apply full throttle and release. Now start it and let it idle for about 1-2 minutes.

My car doesnt have a blower on it, but hearing the words "erratic idle" make me cringe. My idle got so bad I was ready to sell my car. My car wouldnt throw a check engine light, so there was no easily identifiable place to start trouble shooting. After weeks of cussing my car, I called Tom Sessions while I was on vacation in FL and said something like "please help me fix this thing before its on Ebay the day I get back home". Tom told me to try regrounding the TPS ground wire at the TPS and the PCM. It worked like a charm! :) Here's the thread that has instructions and pictures showing what I did to fix it. It'll cost you $1.00 in wire (assuming you have none. I was on vacation, so I had none) and 5 mins of your life.

Twice since I did this the erratic idle has come back, but its thrown a code each time. The code has been P0122 each time (TPS low voltage). All I've done is disconnect the TPS, blow it out real good and reconnect it and its been fine.

You may have two issues.
If the car has a fuel pump voltage booster on it, it may need the power wire moved down to the battery and off the fuse box post.
You've already checked all the connections, so I'd say that the advice to clear the computer memory by pulling the plugs is good.
After reconnecting, turn the key on and show the PCM full throttle voltage before starting.
I can't tell you how may times I've seen strange conditions pop up on the cars and trucks, only to have them cured by a reboot of the computer.

Regards,
Sean

Thanks for the responses. Sean, I do have the MSD boost-a-pump and it is wired to the post on the fuse box. I'll run it from the starter and reboot the pcm. Madduc and Chad, I will keep your info for any future issues. Thanks, Bill
