New Catch Can from PBJ

Just finished installing PBJ's new catch can on my gen 1. Quality is outstanding, install took less than 5 minutes. No holes to drill, mounting utilizes factory bolts. Another well thought out product from Joe and the St Louis gang.

how does it mount, where are the fasteners? Could Joe post a picture of the mounting hardware prior to attaching to the car.

Looks good and I also can see the washer fluid, but I never use the washer anyway...don't like to 'eat' it while driving!

Here, let me help out everyone who is confused. This is a Gen I car, washer bottle is just to the right of the positive battery terminal. The Gen II cars have it where Marty has installed his catch can. Clear as mud? :2tu: :2tu:

Looks good. I just recently picked one up from them too. They powdercoated mine wrinkle red which closely matches the original red under the hood.

Ah, now I see where 1Tony1 was going!!

JackB, it mounts using two of the bolts that hold the exhaust heat sheild in place, couldn't be easier.

2001 GTS, thank you for the compliment. I try to keep all of my cars spotless, every my daily driver. A bit obsessed you could say.

Chuck, the car is on the jackstands as of this morning, flushing the brake fluid and installing a new battery!!

Am I the only one here that does not know what the catchcan is catching? I'm assuming its a byproduct/endproduct from the SC. Anyone want to clue us in as to what the hail this is?

It catches oil/vapor caused by blowby. Happens in NA and blown cars, just more pronounced on blown cars. The stock configuration dumps oil/vapors into the aircleaner housing to be injested by the engine. Causes detonation and craps up the throttle bodies and intake tract with oil. EPA does not like the vapors vented, cars don't like to breath oil.

What is the purpose of having a breathing element attached like this one vs, plumbing the catch can back to the airbox? I thought these cans worked better if there was some vaccuum pulling the air from the crankcase as with the original setup? Plus, isn't there some stink associated with the breather element only?

The air being "pushed" out of the engine has to escape some where. If there is no breather element, then the air cannot move out out the engine as it is suppose to do.

Mileage varies on this, and will (of course) depending on where you mount the catch can. Mine is on the passenger side and I have a little filter-jobber on top. The fumes would occasionall get sucked in my the AC vent on that side, and the smell would come into the cabin. I have since change the filter to an old-style cap with a hose fitting. I ran the hose DOWN, so the fumes will go under the car....testing so far is good.

So it would be incorrect to have the hose coming out of the valve cover into the can and the other hose from the can to the factory air box? Thats how i have mine installed. Also i pluged the breather filter on top of catch can for no fumes


If my install is incorrect please let me know

That is fine, the oil flowing out of the valve train will be trapped in the can. Some preferr to dead-end into the can, that is the way mine is set-up.

You don't want to stop there, even more offensive is the PCV valve at the front underside of the intake. This throws oil directly back into the intake, especially when engine braking. This should be sealed off and a breather added to repalce it.
