Oops, the 253mph car was the new Bugatti Veyron (488ci/1001hp/4300lb) in the same issue. (November 2005)

That's 253 top speed-governor limited mph.

$4.5 million???

The MSRP is 1.2 million, which is still a lot, but nothing close to 4 and a half...

One of my friends witnessed a Veyron running the 'ring in Germany and said it was quite impressive!

Any car that's a luxo cruiser, weighs 4500lbs and has to be speed governed to keep it under 253mph which still makes it the fastest production car ever produced by a fair margin is impressive in my book no matter what the price.

Wonder if anyone will have the **** to defeat the governer? I'm thinking it is probably there for a very good reason as in it turns into a glider at 255mph.

I actually think they are more worried about tires than aerodynamics.

I'm sure Heffner could defeat the governer and squeeze a little more HP.

Interesting looking car. I guess they are trying to stop what happened to the Enzo and just milk the market instead of a third party making all the money. $652K for an Enzo. I would take one at that price...... so I could flip it!

October 3, Autoweek - same car only cranks out 987 HP, $1.2 million, and you can go from LA to New York in 11 hours and 9 minutes - oh, that's at 250 mph.
Good Luck.

A governor really isn't needed. Put on some of those run flats that the corvettes use and drill some holes to bolt on a rear wing from Pep Boys. Gliding and Tire issue solved. Simple.

Serious question: Can a Heffner Twin Turbo 1200 rear wheel horsepower car with a 3:08 rear top out higher than 260mph? Why or why not?

Due to the drag coefficient, I would assume the answer is no... Didn't SVS run one close to these times though?

This is a record for a "stock" vehicle if I remember correctly even if a TT Viper could surpass these speeds.

According to the article, the drag coefficient goes from 41 to 36 once the car is put into top speed mode if I remember correctly (lowers even more and rear wing is mostly retracted to reduce drag). The GTS has a drag coefficient of 35. I don't know that anyone has really done much work going above 200 in a GTS other than SVS.

[******] did 210 in the standing mile and a little over 220 before running out of airstrip.

Not to shoplift the thread, but didn't Jesse James (Monster Garage) say something about trying to set a land speed record? I think he was on Leno when he stated this and I believe it will be by car not bike if I remember correctly.
