OUCH, Steve!

Hope it's polishing out OK?

I had similar happen to me, except my door was lifted when it bust and spring pinged off, door came down suddenly and nearly cracked my scull and broke my back. ...Garage door is now side hinged, never again, can't even begin to think about it...but it could have been the Viper it came down on...NO!

If not your homeowners policy, it should be covered under your comprehensive part of your auto policy. This should also provide a lower deductible. Good luck.

Steve, I have 5 over-head doors two are double wide and all have two and four springs! What I did is to install a one/eight inch cable through the center of each spring, secured each end of the cable to the ceiling! So if they brake they wont go to far!!!! It happened only once years ago and it wasn't my car

but I had to rub out the scratchs.

Since about 10 years ago all replacement springs are of the "safety" type with a metal rod running throught the center to keep a broken spring from flying out and damaging something or someone.

Would be cheap insurance to anyone with springs of old to look into replacing them with the new style.
