Ok, I finally got around to getting pictures of my car and the Viper Logo Under the hood. Seems to be holding up good too. Put about 200 miles on the car on Saturday and no sign of the paint wearing.

I added a few more pictures too:

Very nice!!! I did the same thing with my C5 hoodliner and the paint has held up great. I'll be doing the RT/10 also and hope to make it look like yours. What type of paint did you use?

That is hot. I hope you don't mind me copying that because it looks great. Remember that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

ZX1100,
I can not remember the brand of paint, but the white back-ground is a high temp gloss white spraypaint. The Yellow I picked up at Home Depot in the Pint Sized Can and rolled on with a small 2 inch roller as well as brush painted the small points. The yellow is not an exact match, but close enough for me. I taped off the logo with masking tape, don't do like I did and buy the cheapest masking tape, it did not stick to well and the edges lifted when it got wet. That is why the edges are a little fuzzy in some points, from the tape lifting up and the spray getting underneath.

tmcalist,
I actually copied if off of MES (Has a blue white emblem) and Mark Super-Charged Cooper who did his emblem in red. So I guess the credit would go to them. I liked it and liked the fact even more that it was something unique that you could do for under $20.

Wow! Incredibly nice it looks almost 3D.

I just want to know what kind of wheels those are and where you got the hardtop?

Awesome looking viper!

Finally, someone's done it in yellow! Looks like a good match for my '01. Since this has been on my winter projects list but haven't gotten around to it yet, any secrets you learned to removing the liner fasteners without breaking them?

Bad_Byte,
The top is the standard Mopar roof available for the GEN I. The wheels are HRE 547's.

Ken H,

I did not find any secret for taking off the little fasteners, I started pulling them off by hand util my fingers got sore, then I used the needle nose pliers. I probably broke at least half of them, no big deal I found Pep Boys had the exact same fasteners available in 3 packs. I had been wanting to do it since I saw Marks Red GTS and just procrastinated, but it was really simple. The only thing that took a while was it took about 25 coats of the white gloss spray paint to cover the black. The yellow went over the white real well!

You guys have inspired me, as did several folks who bought hoodliners.... Those who dont have the time or patience I hope will like this:

PARSTRACK is taking orders, and has some NEW hoodpads in process right now, in RED and RACE YELLOW. Professional job.

Inaugural price will be $299.

Just want the OUTLINE painted? Save $25.

Here is a pic of my Blue/White hood. Now if I can only get my engine to look as good as ACELLR8 I'll be all set
cool.gif

Copied from my original post
http://vca1.viperclub.org/ubb/Forum14/HTML/008529.html

>>Here's how I did it and some things/tips to look out for.

1. Started with a regular can of paint (bad idea) and a paint brush. Painted on 2 coats. The paint keep seeping into the liner, and looked terrible. Also it left brush marks and uneven texture. The paint caused the liner to become ruff.

2. After the failed attempt in #1 above I decided to mask off the whole emblem and SPRAY paint (good idea) it all white. This worked out great and provided a nice white background to paint the blue onto. It was hard to get the masking tape to stick to the liner so I had to be careful when spray painting it.

3. I used High Gloss Krylon spray paint for both the white and blue. The blue I hand painted with some paint brushes (the kind used to paint a picture) Sprayed the blue into a glass then painted it on, it went on real nice. The spray paint was a much thinner paint and works MUCH better than regular cans of paint.

4. It looks good standing next to the car and in the picture but if you stick your head up under the hood, some of the over spray and brush marks become noticeable. JonB has a good idea with using a brand new one to paint. I figured it would be something stupid like $500 for the liner being its a Viper part. I may re-do another one some time. Now that I did the first one, I bet the next time it will turn out much better.

5. Total cost about $20 took about 1 hour to get it masked off then 15 min to spray paint it (3 coats at 5 min per coat) then it took about 30-45 min per coat of blue (used 3 coats) then about an hour on the final touch up with the blue and white. This does not include the time for the original failed attempt with regular cans of paint.

Here is what I've decided to go with on mine. Hipefully tie the engine red and yellow together. Also figured it would allow me to spraypaint the background black to seal the matting without worrying about getting a clean edge.

RED 93RT,
Sorry I do not have any part numbers on the hose sleeves or fittings. They were done before I bought the car.
Thanks for the info on the stainless tips for the side exit RTs, I am ready to order it as soon as I can get a good measurement of the exaust diameter.

KEN H,
That color combo looks sweet!! Let us know how it turns out and post a picture of it.

Thanks all for the kind words on the car! Now if I could only make it go FASTER!!!

The Eastwood Company makes a tool for pulling off those fasteners that are useful for most interior trim applications too. The part number is 52021 and only costs $13.99 (includes two other trim removal tools). I think I've seen these at the local auto parts store too. Hope this helps.

JonB, I sent you an E-Mail. I am wondering if this can be adapted to my 94? I like the finished look of the hood pad.

Thanx!

Yes, we have both Gen-1 and Gen II pads. [Some 92-3-4s dont HAVE a pad, but may be pinned... let me know?]

$299 for 2-colors. We even include the pin-puller tool that makes de-install a snap, and it ain't your fingernails snappin'! New pads included. (Used pads begin to build film almost IMMEDIATELY! Even a 500-mile pad is difficult to paint.)

What you get: A pre-sealer (5-6 coats), White primer for true color, paint 2-color logo to match, and then clearcoat! #-color ads masking and another step, and adds $50. Outline only? Save $50.

Can be cleaned easily windexed when road film / oil spray affects it later on. Can also be carefully vacuumed.

PartsRack has gotten the first 4 sold! Paints are mixed, and we will be producing Red/Silver, Yellow/Silver Red/White, beginning this week. Blue/white in 2 weeks. Our professional manufacturer can produce about 2-3 per week, and we are promising a 30-day turnaround at this time. We will post a photo next week of Job-1, Red/Silver. We ship by Fedex Ground 3-4 day for $30-35.

Shortly, we will even add flames, flags, and more! Prowlers too. Our shop has full-custom capabilities, and a lot of experience. We will entertain custom orders in April, after the initial production.

You WILL be impressed w/ these pads!

All,

OK,, my turn to throw my hat into this thread, and I have to offer my services for this deal!

Either send me your hood liner, or I can buy new, and paint the logo. I will not charge any markup for parts, what I pay is what you pay.

I painted the logo on my Red 2k Viper, (Tony, it is on your server, can you post for me) or (I can send a picture)

I do not have any overhead, and can charge a very reasonable price.

Just the outline, one (1) color of choice, $125.00
Out line and fill lower valleys colors of choice $175.00

If you are interested, please let me know, I can send the names of people who have seen it for reference.

I couldn't find the tool that Gary mentioned, so I bought a general purpose trim remover tool for $3.99. It helped, but is bigger than it should be. I only broke one fastener, although I mangled a couple of others. I taped off the logo with masking tape and then used Rust-0leum Painter Choice semi-gloss black spray paint to prep and partially seal the background. I used the entire can in multiple coats. I then applied the Sun Yellow and Apple Red gloss paint from the same series applied with a small foam brush. Took two coats to cover. This paint comes in small 8oz cans from Home Depot. I really like the way it came out.

Vipermad,
It does look pretty good close-up as well. It would have been about perfect if I had taken time to touch up a couple of small blobs, but considering the normal viewing position, I didn't bother taking the time.

Check out the link below, it shows a closer shot of the paint and how it came out and has some other information as well. It also has an outline of the logo which can be used to play with color combinations in a paint type program or it can be printed out.

We'll be expecting pictures (for the Archives of course!).

Now I am confused and curious. Are there different hood liner fasteners between years? On my '01 the fasteners are a winged affair that really want something to slip under the fastener head and depress a finger thingy to get it to come out. If you just pull it out, the finger gets bent out of shape or break. I don't have any clue how a phillips screwdriver could be used to take mine out, but maybe I'm just being stupid (wouldn't be the first time, I was the guy who was going to take off the whole hood to paint the logo).

Vipermad, those fasteners are definitely different than what I have in my car, so they did make a change at some point between '97 & '01. I don't have a pic of the whole fastener, but here is one that shows how they look installed in the car.

I am going to try this upgrade myself next weekend
I just wanted everyone to know that you do not have to try and guess if colors match with hardware store brands.
I called my local dodge parts dept. and ordered 2 cans of 2001 viper yellow no problem.
$8 per can 5 oz each. Should be plenty with some left over.
also they are selling me replacement clips for $2 each.
should make things easy.
the 2001 paint codes are:

yellow WYR
blue YBW
red LRN

FYI: if i screw it up badily the local dodge dealer parts dept.
quoted me $133 for a new pad

wish me luck

Just started my hood snake tonight. I found my best method was
to take off the hood. 4 bolts, two people, and lay the hood on the car cover.
Masking tape with newspaper around the whole snake. Make sure the tape is down good. Spray high temp gray primer, several coats, dry with fan is fast. Careful you get primer on back edges of depressed areas.
Then several coats of gloss white. Looks great so far.
Hood back on in minutes for now, dry well.
Next up - roll on red on raised areas. Photos to follow.
And thanks to MES and Accelr8, and Mark Cooper and Tony.. all good advice ! and great photos !

Here is an update:

today removed the hoodpad
smile.gif
cost for removal tool $5
on my 2001 there were 19 pushpins. and 2 pin that hold wires.
I purchased all new pins (i broke most of them) $40.00
and my 2 cans of paint from dodge so i have exact color match
$16.
then i picked up the same paint Ken used for prep rustoleum semi gloss black and foam brush, roller, masking tape $10 so I am around $75 with tax so far.

my question now is after i apply the yellow should I apply a clearcoat?? or will the factory yellow be okay without?
Thanks
JIM
P.S. the dodge parts rep advised there are only 51 gen 2 hood pads available. cost $133. I am using the original pad unless i screw it up. but if you are going to do this and want a new one get it quick.

I am finally done (3 week project) it is on the car!!
it took me so long because I was striving for perfection
and I am not an artist.
basically is your short on painting skills but long on patience
this is an easy mod.
I put in about 2 hrs a night 4 nights a week for 3 weeks.
that's right about a 24hrs in labor.
I used MES technique of spraying the paint into a baby food jar and then applying it by brush and using plant lights to bake it.
So no brush marks. well, minimal brush marks. Anyhow, I will let you all judge my work in about 1 week when I get my pics developed and put on a kodak photo cd. hopefully I will be able to post them.
As we speak I am painting my harness pads.
the snakeoly black pads come with grey lettering, I painting those yellow as well.. will try to post them also.
what can I say I have YELLOW FEVER, and my fire extinguisher is in the shop, you guessed it getting painted yellow.
if you do the hood pad the key is take your time....
