I am experiencing alot of pinging on excelleration. I use the best 91 octane gas I can find here in Cali but it is getting bad. I know this can damage the engine, what can I do?

Octane Booster...NOS Brand will not clog you injectors, but is rather expensive...about $10...Hopefully others can recommend a less expensive brand that is safe for our V10's. Xylene or toulene straight up will also boost octane.

I experienced the same pinging, especially after California lowered the octance from 93, I think, to 91. I sometimes use a gallon of racing gas, 110 octane, to a tank of premium. It definitely helps.

using some race gas to boost the octane is only a temporary solution to something that can be more serious.. how long have you been pinging? a few tanks, or did it just start recently?

there was another member here a little while back who was having some pinging issues in his gts (brad manhattan beach w/ a 96-97 GTS).. i think the end result was an arrow rebuild...

do you have the extended warranty?

Brad....pete here....you might try searching and enter the word, "pinging". Some interesting posts can be found there. I didn't try "detonation", but as you know, it's the same deal. Hope this helps you out. pete the xgg

Just hope its only the gas. That's easy to fix.Could be a lot worse as in oil or whatnot being sucked into the combustion chamber. The easy fix on a simple engine if not going to an octane booster is to lower engine running temp with a lower temp thermostat.MY guess is that a 180 deg t-stat would do the trick.Too bad its such a pia to change out on a viper or I would already have one. I had the problem on my 96 GTS at WOT. Carbon builds up on the head and causes detonation. I had the heads pulled and cleaned under warranty. Continued to occur and eventually a Tech determined that there was a high point on top of the head that was causing the carbon to build up. Don't think that is too likely to happen but you might check for carbon.
