OK guys, I have had enough of this BS... here is the deal with this noise, lets see if someone can figure it out.

This noise seems to be comming from the rear hatch area of the car, INSIDE the cabin... but may be resonating so it just seems like it. It sounds exactly like what you would hear if you put up the hatch glass and tapped it with your fingernail... kind of like a "popping" noise. I first entertained the idea that the hatch glass was rattling, but this is not the case. The car has done this since day one.

Here are the particulars:
-I have never noticed it at highway speeds
-Seems to do it most around 10-40 MPH
-Seems not to do it under heavy accelleration
-happens almost always on bumpy/dipping roads
-seems temperature dependant, cold car=less popping
-Coming from hatch area, does not seem to be comming from a particular side.

I read another post and found something that may be it... I am thinking, could it possibly be the Trak-Lok in the diff popping as the tires change speeds VERY LITTLE over bumps? Maybe they forget the additive at the factory? Also, Every once in a while, from a dead stop, if I make a hard over turn, I get a funny noise-kind of like a rubbing tire...but it does not seem to have a location, and does not happen all the time and only at VERY slow speeds-(may very well be P.S. pump though, as I cant remember if I was hard-over)

I have already checked for a loose spare, loose glass, loose suspension, loose body panels, loose hatch hinges.

Man, that's a beautiful car!

But back to your problem....

I saw a post some months ago about some sheetmetal under the center console, that was doing an oil can impersonation. The Viper tech took a center punch, and dimpled the sheet, which stopped it from oil-canning over bumps.

But your noise doesn't sound like it's coming from there......

The only experience I have with anything like a "Popping" noise is when the sun shines on my dashboard, and it expands. I would describe it as little "ticking" noises, like you hear when you shut off your car, as it cools off.

When the sun shines direct, the noise is most prevalent. Int he shade, it doesn't happen at all.

Does your popping noise show up when in the sun?

VIC- Actually, Sun has no effect on it at all... It does it durring the day or night... no difference. Dont think the sheetmetal is my problem either, as it appears to be comming from far behind my head when I drive.

I just want to get this fixed before VOI7 or you may find me on the side of the road with my car in approx 10,000 peices. Cherry picker and all...

What if you drove a short bit with the rear glass open, just to see if that is the surface the popping sound is resonating from?

Maybe you could tie the glass down half-way, so it won't bounce against the stops over bumps.

If the sound goes away, I would look into the glass possibility further.

Have you taken the spare and jack completely out, and drove it that way for a test?

You may also want to check around the exhaust tip area. If it's a rattling noise, it could be your tips on your exhuast hitting against the metal bracket on the exit whe the pipes come out. Mine did it a bit...but didn't do it when it got hot.

I'll try the glass-up thing tomorrow, and i'll check if the exhaust is loose when I wash the car tonight.

No, I havent tried driving without the spare and jack. I did however have them out a couple days ago, and when put back in, there was no change.

Even if the jack, spare, and glass all look just fine, there is still reason to remove or eliminate them.

There is a dynamic thing that happens, when objects move under inertia.

Also, a slight flex of the body may cause the rear glass to slide around a bit, and if it is tightly latched, it will have to slip against the friction of the latch and rubber.

Let us know what happens, Holmes!

I wouldn't drive the car with the back glass open... could get
broken, I'd get someone to help, either have someone drive the
car for you while you are in the back area or have someone get in
the back while you drive and locate the noise.

First though, take out the spare tire and jack....

this should at least tell you if the noise is coming from the
inside or the outside of the car....

How is it going to break if it is tied half way up?

Are the hinges going to get closer or go farther away from each other?

That is the only way the glass could be stressed, if it is secured mid-way.

Which brings up a good point.

Final GTS, if you tie the glass half way up, also put a pillow under it, so it can't slam downward, either.

This would be my guess, have the dealer change the Diff. fluids. It happened to me, every time I backed up I heared this chattering noise from the back, sure enough that was the problem... no additive.

JIM,

Man...you gotta MAKE time to drive it! Wife and kids sleeping...? YOUR GONE. we'll set up a Late-Night cruise of of these nights so you can join up. You better not sell it...

The smartire system works great, both mine and pats are installed. The only hard part was to find somewhere to re-balance the tires for us...I still have to get pats done though.

Sorry to continue with the sub-topic...BUT, I was really interested in this item (SmarTire Tire Monitor) but I begged off since, due to the cost and simple pia to break down the wheels and remount. What's funny, is that over the past year. I have only had to add air (between 1/2 and 1 lb.) to the tires one time!? They seem to hold at 29 lbs. for 6 months at a time. Are you guys finding that you need to mind the pressure that much?

CITYSNAKE- Actually, mounting the sensors was cheap and quick. You only have to dismount one bead of the tire, have someone pull up and hold the tire, mount the sensor, and then slide it back over and pop the one bead back. My local dealer charged me 30$ to do all 4. I did however go with the full function system, it displays tire pressure-(corrected for temp), Tire pressure ACTUAL variance, Tire temp, low pressure warnings, low pressure alerts, temp alerts, etc.

The main reason I went with this system is because after owning 4 cars now with low profile tires-(this one being the worst)-and having a couple bad experiences, it was worth the 300 bucks for peice of mind. On my previous car, a 3000GT VR-4 with 245/40/18 tires, those things could hit 7 psi before you could actually tell they were going flat. I was in the habbit of checking tires at every stop after that, and I just got sick of it with this car...so I bought the monitor to do it for me.

MOTOR CITY MADMAN- LOL, I know, my car is ALWAYS a pleasure to drive when the radio is on...heh. But... I am a very ANAL car owner unfortunatly...so, the noise has got to go.

UPDATE: I just got done pulling the spare, spare mounting bolt, jack, handle, carpet, and amp out of my trunk, and I am STILL getting the noise. (NOTE: My trunk is stripped clean) I checked the rear sways, and they APPEAR to be tight. I am taking the car nto the dealer tomorrow morning to see if we can figure it out. Any other idea's for things to check? I think I may pull off the carpet over the tank tonight and see if maybe something is loose under there...

Hey, oneslowhemi, my 99 GTS had the exact same problem. The rattling was driving me crazy until I jacked the car up and there on the passengers side was a sway bar end link with no nut. I found a nut and torqued it down and no more rattling.

You might examine your brake lines, check to see if there is any metal to metal contact with the underside of your Viper. I had this problem with another DC car. Once found..no noise, sqeaks or popping sounds. Good luck!

Could a bad speaker be the problem? My speaker blew out and now it makes a popping sound.
