My guess is that it will be more reliable and will far less warranty claims than manually equipped cars and will take at least 1 second off the 1/4 mile.

1 second seems like a lot............if that's the case I'm certain quite a bit of race cars will be changing to pshift otherwise they will be at a huge disadvantage.

1 second for 3-4 shifts off throttle...here's the difference between a manual and the tiptronic (a far worse tranny than the new one) for 0-60 on 2007 tt porsche:

"911 Turbo reaches 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds; 99 mph arrives in 8.4 seconds.
The Tiptronic S transmission brings the 0-60 mph time down to a mere 3.4 seconds, with 99 mph showing up in 7.8 seconds.
So for 0-60 we get .3 seconds.
I think at least 1 second for 3-4 shifts is pretty close to what it would be for Viper.
I think a lot of guys would buy 1 if that's how bad you would be smoked - even if it was a $5K option. Hell stripes in Canada were a $3K option

Hey Paul,

How / where did you arrange to drive all of those neat cars?

There was such an uproar, mostly in the US, over the new M5 having only the SMG 7 speed gearbox that BMW is releasing a 6-speed manual this fall.

Americans don't seem to be as infatuated with driving like Michael Schumacher as the Europeans are.

Really? I did not even hear about this. I know this was supposed to happen when they first came out but then you never heard anything else after that.

Just confirmed the manual gearbox rumor on Edmunds:

A six-speed manual will become available next fall, but it will be exclusive to the U.S. market. BMW expects to sell 2,000 M5s a year in America, about 50 percent of those with the manual gearbox. For now the sedan body style is it, but Mercedes-Benz does offer its E55 AMG as a sedan and a wagon, so an M5 wagon may be in the cards. "We're looking at doing a wagon, but nothing is confirmed," is all Buchko would say.

Dan.
I signed up for a group called World Class Driving (.com).
They have a traveling circus of exotic cars going around the country. Costs $795 for 6 hours of driving.
They have 13 cars, and you get the drive the ones other people have not smashed up yet. GT40 and ZO6 were crunched and unavailable.

Really great day. One other Viper Owner joined me.

We drove F430, Gallardo, Bentley GT, Jaguar XK, Prosche turbo, Maserati Grand Sport with sky hook suspension. Speeds up to 125+

This was a great opportunity to drive all these cars back to back. Lots of different transmission to try out.
