I just got a set of shaved Toyos and I have a few questions.

1.) The seller said to mount them, do an aggressive drive topped with a left- and right-hand doughnut, then pull them off to get balanced. Reason being the pickups on them will throw off the balancing. Anyone second that assessment or dispute it? Seems like a lot of work but if I have to I have to.

2.) This isn't the best picture but you can see enough. There are 3 spots like this on one of the rears, and this is the worst (and the clearest picture). On the far right of the gouge you can see metal coming through. It doesn't look like it was done in transit but rather during dismounting. My inclination is to say that's not safe but I thought I'd ask here first. From what I could tell it doesn't go all the way through.

TIA!

I think you're right
it was probably done while breaking the bead
they were prying under the rim to loosen the tire and cut into the sidewall
with that bulge on the bead, the tire will never seat or may leak slowly

send them back and get a refund for shipping and all other costs

Contact the seller for resolution.

I bought a set of the shaved R888s and they didn't have any of that kind of stuff wrong with them. I just mounted and balanced mine and they are great. Hook good and balanced with no issues.

I sent an email this morning.

This is by no means a thread to bash the seller. I know the seller has a good rep with us and thought that MAYBE the tires are fine to mount, thus why he sent them as-is. It's probably just an oversight and I'm sure it'll be resolved swiftly. Their customer service has been stellar thus far.

Partially off-topic: Red Snake is an inspiration. I have my springs and caps sitting in the garage along with my Gen. II 18" OEM wheels. I saw the stance he had and inquired and had to do it. Bye-bye, fascia paint! I'll post pics when it's wrapped up; cleaning the oil off from the ill-mounted catch can has proven to be fun and time-consuming.

I had this happen to me on a new Pirelli Rosso where the installer broke the bead and try to tell me that my tire was defected. The tire leaked like the Titanic. Do not drive on those.
