I took my 96 GTS to work today and recived a very unpleasent exciting ride. I live in a country area where the road winds back to our home for some 3 miles. As I was motoring along all of sudden the power steering quit and I was close to loosing the car in the ditch. It take quite a bit of force to steer with the pump ot. We lights for generator go on air stops working and first thought was the belt failed. Open the hood and sure enough the belt is off the pullies but in one piece. Checked to see if somthing locked up and when I looked at the power steering pump the pully was gone. All that was left was the hub.

I wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. This seems like a real safty problem if its somthing that has been happening to others. It seems like the pump should have a metal pully and not a plastic one for this critical item. By the way care has 8700 miles on it.

It, like, just fell off? You hadn't noticed a wobble before or felt an imbalance? Probably be a good idea to torque the pulley bolts once per year.

Well there isn't any bolt. Its a plastic pulley and it failed at the hub. I think the gen 3 engines have a metal one. there wan no indication that anything was wrong until it just quit!!! Very bad failure mode. No noise or other indication.

Mine broke this spring...I dynoed my car and on the way home it came right off on the highway. Mine broke the center out of the pulley...the center section was still pressed on to the pump shaft.
Later,
Joe
