I am pretty sure Dan & DC said 15/50 moibil 1.. But he is closed today and hopefully doing an oil change on the viper tomorrow.... YES YES used the search button:D

What do you run in your motors?????

EDIT.. viper does no track just street driving.........

For street use I would recommend 0w-40. That should be readily available in Europe as it is an ACEA rated product. 15w-50 should be limited to very hot environments or extreme use (like the track).

To answer your actual question, I use 15W-40 diesel oil. If you have to go looking, 0W-40. Does it really ever get that hot in England to need a 15W-50?

Think of a diesel in the US:
highly turbocharged, 80% duty cycle, high ring land temperatures, expensive, some amount of blowby, larger than usual engine size, low-moderate engine speeds...

sound familiar?

So you would like:
capability to tolerate high temperature, detergents to keep rings and lands clean, higher TBN to handle fuel/acids in oil, more dispersants to keep soot & contaminants from forming sludge, excellent wear protection, good resistance against viscosity shear-down...

Diesel oil.

The reason I also like Euro / ACEA oils is because many (half?) of the passenger cars in Europe are diesels, so they are very well formulated. The US diesel oils are perhaps overkill in many respects, but the Euro/ACEA oils would be very, very fine oils for a gasoline engine as well. I think both the 0W-40 and 15W-50 carry ACEA claims.

While we have your attention, how does a high horsepower marine application change the equation?

If the marine application is more steady state and not too cold ambient temperature when starting, I would move up from 0W40 to 5W40 (synthetic diesel) or 15W40 (mineral diesel). At 100% load 100% of the time the lubricant chemistry of anti-wear, anti-oxidants, cleanliness become more important and I'd prefer a true diesel oil.
