I have participated in drag racing events, but no road racing. To my mind there is much less chance of bodily harm to the driver or car in drag racing than in road racing. Never the less, I would like to participate in this event but don't really know what is involved. Specifically, can a person get insurance to cover this sort of thing? Does my existing car insurance or health insurance cover me or whom or whatever I may harm if something goes wrong?

Do I need a racing license, helmet, any special vehicle requirements?

Thanks in advance.

hopefully it is a driving school. just remember you will need a helmet, long sleeve shirt, jeans, tennis shoes are fine if you don't have driving shoes, remember to sign in as a student, this way if you injure your car it will be covered by your insurance company....

I'd like to go. Does anybody know if they conduct this event similarly to the way PDA does or are there all kinds of restrictions on speed and passing?

RSNAKE, If I can recommend something....Road America is one of the premier road circuits in the US. It is a truely breathtaking circuit. But....it is no where to learn to drive your Viper quickly your first time. May I recommend that you e-mail the Illinois Region VCA president, Bill Sampognaro, at [email protected] and tell him you would like to sign up for the driving school at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven Michigan at the end of May. This is a perfect track for a beginer. Maybe after a few schools and a lot of seat time you could give Road America a try.

This event that the F body club host is really cost effective, but remember that the past few years the weather has been nasty. If I am not mistaken they have had flurries the past few times. Not a good mix for a Viper. The owners manual states that tire chains may tear up bodywork. So many pack it up early and head home. End of May in Midwest is usually much better weather wise.

All new Viper Owners in the tri-state and surrounding area are welcomed to participate.

Rich et. al,

I am finding out from the people hosting the event if this outing can be considered a 'driving school' or not. This is my first time looking into assisting others in attending the event. I'd really like to provide helpful and informative information to the crowd from this board that might be going. Any questions that can be given to me to find out, I'd like to be helpful in retrieving the information.

Let me know what I can ask for you to see you there.

Cheers,

Jay K.

RSNAKE and others, The below is lifted directly off of the FAQ page: http://www.speed-seekers.com/faq.html

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where do get the registration form?
A. Registration form is given to Paid MFBA members on Dec. 14, last year drivers Dec. 21, and will be open to the public on Dec. 28, 2002.

Q. What is the cost of the event?
A. $320.00 (tax included) covers the cost of April 12th & 13th for one slot and one general admission each day.

Q. How much track time will I get?
A. An average participant has driven over 350 miles of on track experience if driven in all the sessions provided during the event.

Q. Will passengers be allowed?
A. Yes, passengers are allowed in the vehicle only in the front seat. They must have a approved helmet and working seatbelt that fits appropriately.

Q. Do I have to be a MFBA club member to participate?
A. No, you do not.

Q. Do I need to make any special modifications to the car for this event?
A. No, special modifications are not necessary, just make sure your vehicle meets our tech inspection criteria. Your judgment is at your own risk, ex. stock brake pads heat up quickly.

Q. Can any type of vehicle participate in this event?
A. This event is on a real racetrack, and it is designed for performance/ sports-oriented cars. If you are unsure if your vehicle would be proper for this event, please ask us. [email protected]

Q. Can I bring friends or family for ride-alongs ?
A. Yes you can. Give them a chance to experience the ‘business side” of Road America? Passengers are allowed in the front passenger seat only. They must have an approved helmet and a working seatbelt.

Q. I know that if I’m a driver, I need a helmet- what about my passenger, do they need one too?
A. Any passenger will also need a helmet that meets our requirement.

Q. It’s Wisconsin, what if it rains or otherwise?
A. In the past we’ve successfully ran in the wet and cold. The weather is monitored closely and if adverse driving weather approaches, we take great care in deciding if the event continues or we have to stop driving for a bit.

Q. What if I get hungry, is there food available or do I bring my own?
A. There is a food stand open that serves breakfast in the morning and then warm food all day long. If you want to pack a cooler, that’s OK. Restrooms will also be open. No alcoholic beverages allowed on Road America's premises.

Q. If I bring my camera, will I find a good shot?
A. You bet! Actually, we encourage everyone to bring their cameras. There are plenty of places to get great shots from around the track and paddock.

Q. Do I have to drive back into town for gas?
A. There is a pay via-credit card pump in the paddock that has 100 octane unleaded race gas. For 93 octane, you would have to go into town approximately 2-3 miles.

Q. Where do our cars go between ‘sessions’?
A. The cars that are participating in the on-track activity and their support vehicles and trailers can park in the competition paddock.

Lastly, I sent another email, my second request for info regarding the insurance question and should hear from the organizers of this event rather soon. I included the link to this post in the email so that they too can see the exposure that this board will provide.

Cheers,

Jay K.

Thanks heatseeker. My brother lives in Chicago and just bought a Venom 650. It will be a good opportunity for us to go head to head for the first time (in the Vipers). Hope to see everyone there.

Jay, it was great meeting you on the phone! I am curious about how much track time I will be getting. How many cars per group? This should be a lot of fun! Thanks, Paolo
