Ran a new Pontiac GTO last night

Was out cruisin around with the girlfriend last night when all of a sudden I hear a loud roar from behind us. I look in the mirror to see a black GTO bouncing up & down. He pulls along side and we both get on it a little but we are in traffic and nothing gets decided. He pulls back in behind me and I head out of town, with him still following me, to a long straigt deserted section of highway thats about 1 mile long. I pull over to see if he's interested in giving a rip here and he pulls in behind me. He wants to go but wants to start from a 20 MPH roll. This is fine with me because my stock Pilots spin like crazy from a stop. He says he'll beep his horn 3 times & we go on the third beep, I'm OK with that also. He's kind of cocky so I'm thinking this GTO may not be stock because theres a dyno & performace shop in town that specialises in head & cam packages for Vettes, SS Camaros, & GTO's. We line up & start rolling at 20 mph, on the 3rd beep we both nail it and for once the Pilots don't wheel hop or break loose, the car hooks hard. So does the GTO. For the first second or two the cars are dead even and i start to worry, wishing I had 3.55 gears right about now instead of my 3.08's. Then the Viper begins building momentum and I start to gain the advantage, seeing his front fender start to drop back makes me happy. I nail 2nd at 5500 rpms and once again the Pilots hook with minimal wheel spin. Now I can't see the GTO next to me at all but 3rd gear is coming up and sometimes it's a little bit balky going in. I tell my self to take it easy & make sure I don't miss it. I go for 3rd gear, not as fast as 2nd but as quick as I dare. Nailed it, no problem. I look for the goat, can't see him, look in my rear view mirror about 3/4 of the way through 3rd and see himm falling farther behind. I'm not taking any chances so I don't lift yet. Finally as I'm ready for 4th gear he lets off & pulls behind me, about a bus length behind by now. What a rush, girlfriend enjoyed it also. First real race I've had with the car and it performed admirably. I can't wait to do it again!

Was it a newer GTO with the 5.7??? You would have destroyed him if it was stock. I ran a stock one last fall in my GS400, which is lightly modded, and from 70 to 110 he had a car lenth on me. I was pretty proud of my 4 door family sedan!

Much different results in the GS playing with fellow VCA members; walked like a dog!

Funny thing is that we were not looking for a race just testing the clutch after bleeding it. The Shelby pulls up acting fool and the game was on. He said he had changed the pulley, exhaust, chip, etc.... mid 500's at the wheel. From a roll in second he really got his feelings hurt, then from a roll in 3rd he got completely *****. Pulled over and the guy was confused how his modified shelby got hammered by an old 96 GTS with an exhaust
We didn't tell him that theirs a huffer under the hood.

Doesn't help that they weigh so damn much either. Shave 500 pounds off of the car and Ford(Shelby) may have something but until that happens, they will not be able to hang with anything.

my friends tt gto not tuned 600+rwhp, needing more fuel might be a handful for most vipers. supra putting down 650rwhp and viper putting down 775rwhp. the gto is the chase car racing a cts-v with mods.

How fast have you had your Viper on the street or highway? Just curious because if Bo did 1st, 2nd, and 3rd he hit about 115mph. I've come close to that in my Navigator.
If it's in a bunch of traffic that's one thing, but I open mine up all the time late in the evening on the interstate when there's no traffic.
And congrats Bo! I have a blue 06 GTO here with the LS2 in it. He has headers and exhaust with a supercharger. We lined up at 40mph and ran through the top of 4th. I won by 5 cars. He dyno'd at just under 500rwhp. Oh, thats right, it was on the track.

Wow! I didn't think my post was going to generate so much excitement. Now I feel I must respond to some of the replies. To " My Viper" sorry about not using paragraphs, I just never know when to begin or end them. To "KHitman" Thanks! I may give it a shot! To "2002 Viper GTS ACR" I don't want to get into a ****** match about this and I almost didn't post this story because of this but yea, yea, yea, we all know a stock Viper will beat a stock GTO but as has been stated in this post GTO's can be modded to over 600 hp, gears can be missed, tires can go up in smoke, over reving, driver error, etc, just because one car can have more hp it doesn't mean it will always win the race. I was there, I raced the car, I won the race. Let me beat my chest a little. Geez. To "Casey" Thanks ! To "2MANYTOYS" I appreciate your support. To "GTS Jeff" Sorry about the gear error. It won't happen again! To "SAM 01 RT/10 & Viper TT/10 & Landman" Thanks for explaining how these cars could be modified to beat a Viper. Now we get to Gavin, I did this on a deserted section of road, 1 mile long with no other cars or people in sight, it felt relatively safe. I'm 52 years old, not some crazy kid, this was very exciting, and I'm fortunate enough to have a significant other who felt the same way. I feel sorry for you. You own a muscle car but have never flexed it's muscles on the steet. You should try it sometime. Thats what it's for. But I'm sure you would never do anything as awful as that. I know you always close your cover before striking, rewind all your video tapes before bringing them back, and I know you would never, ever, ever, tear that tag off of your matress. As for getting personal and calling me and my girlfriend idiots I shall call you an idiot and your wife or girlfriend or boyfriend an idiot also for going out with a WUSS like you!
