Raptor Shiftlight Install on a Gen 1.5

Yes, I did a search, yes I read the threads, yes I looked at my service manual. Yes, I even checked the Raptor website. Yes, I still want a little added help. On my 96' RT/10, the PCM is on the passenger side and has 3 ********* plugs that plug into it. What wire do I tap into for a Raptor Shiftlight and what plug is it a part of? TIA!

you're welcome for the light!

hook up to any of the coil wires (not sure which harness it is on the Gen1) for the TACH signal. NOT the wire labeled TACH. if you don't have a manual, time to get one. ;) then power and ground.

easy as pie!

I bumped the thread for the original install. On my 1996 RT, I used the yellow/gray wire in the black plug (you should have white, gray and black plugs)... it is cavity A1 according to my service manual.

Pull the Black plug.... hold it with the two "inside" grooves on the top facing you.. you want the wire that feeds the "hole" in the lower left corner... yellow/gray wire... this is the #4 Ignition coil driver wire.

Thanks JD and Lance! Just the info I needed :) I hope to install it tomorrow if I have time. Lance, did you tap into a power wire (if so, which one?) or just tap into the fusebox for the 12V source? JD, PM sent

same instructions for a 97 gts?

i found a yellow wire with black stripe on the first plug closest from the driver wheel.

I did exactly what Malcoll did. Works fine. But I had a small difference between my tach RPM and the shiftlight, so I had to settle my shiftlight at 4800 in order to turn on at 5200 on my tach.

I installed my shiftlight tonight. It took me a little over an hour, could've done it sooner, but I was in no hurry. It works perfectly. I used the yellow/grey wire just like was suggested. Thanks for the light JD and thanks for the help everyone!

I would have chimed in sooner but it looks like you got it anyway.

Just for reference the coil drivers are the only thing the Raptor can see. Output for the tach signal is around 2.5v and the Raptor can't see anything that low.The coil drivers are around 5V. That's why so many people got frustrated wiring the Raptors because they don't work when you use the tach signal.

I thought I was going to have that same problem when wiring up my FJO progressive controller but that unit sees the tach signal fine but doesn't like the coil drivers because of too much interference. Go figure.

You are not the only one with that problem my McViper brother. When I 1st installed it, I set it at 2000RPM so I could check it without much beating on the car. Last night, I changed it to 5200 and while beating on the car noticed it was 5600 before the light came on. Guess I'll do what you did:drive:

So now the question becomes, which do you trust more, the Shift Light, or the on board Tach (my choice)?
I have hit the rev limiter (6200 rpm) a time or two and the tach is right there.
The dials on the shift light do not even need to be there , they are only relative. Just set the dials to "light on" where you want it relative to your tach.

OK guys.

It's well known, at least I thought so, that the factory tachs are not as accurate as they could be. The Raptor reads in real time, no delay, no lag with a maximum error of 10 RPM at full scale. The factory tach is analog, mechanical movement, prone to error. If you want true rpm indication, believe me, trust the shift light. It has been verified by numerous instruments to be very accurate.

The problem for the tachometer gets worse under first gear hard acceleration, where the tach simply cannot keep up with the engine rpm. I've seen this countless times on drag cars, bikes, etc.

Just thought I would clear this up.
