SRT Orders Rare Viper to be Crushed

The 4th ever produced pre-production 1992 Dodge Viper has been ordered crushed by SRT. This is a not legal for street use and was never meant for resale as it has no emission controls or speed limiters. It features a makeshift hard-top, making it a one-of-a-kind vehicle. The article states that Jay Leno even attempted to purchase it, too bad there is no clause to allow the car to be displayed in a museum. This will be a sad day and will result in a highly viewed YouTube video. Link to article attached.

Sad that they need to be taken to the crusher. Maybe an alternative plan can be put together, but to see all this heritage crushed is indeed a disaster.

That the cars have no emission control has nothing to do with why Fiat decided to crush them. The only reason is money/legal liability due to a couple of those, not-for-the-road cars , being involved in traffic accidents and costing a bunch of money to Fiat due to lawsuits.
You can't blame Fiat for their decision

Why would SRT not take these back to the factory and install all the emissions stuff and make these Legal to sell. Cars with that kind of mileage, Surely there would be a market for those cars to cover there costs for the refurbish. I am sure there would be parts around to make them legal.

The VCA national officers are trying to figure out a way to keep the car "alive".
Someone suggested a museum, which I thought was an excellent idea.
I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

SRT should leverage the news story to market the new car. Swoop in and save the day. Make some hokey Clint Eastwood, Garth Brooks, Sylvester Stallone commercial about how they saved one of the original beloved Vipers with American flags and Apple Pies everywhere. Chrysler doesn't have a little floor space SOMEWHERE to store this car? You don't need to make it legal, or sell it to the public... just take it back and store it for now. I never understand the crush it philosophy and legal issues. Sounds WAY more dangerous to donate Vipers to SCHOOLS. I mean, was that a good idea??

Note- we are also looking at other avenues where VPA can help. We can take the car in as a "parts car" (which would be tragic, I know, but at least these rare parts benefit the viper community, better than a 4 ft' block of plastic and steel). There is precedence, believe it or not, VPA actually has an entire chassis (?!)

Or, we are looking into whether we have/can donate/can implement parts in the inventory to make the car "legal" so it doesn't have to be destroyed.

Hmm, shine, you might be right there. That would not apply to another entity, however(?). Even the (gone) Chrysler museum was likely another entity, and we know the VPA is...

For the record, I have now gotten 10 personal emails notifying me of this story, so clearly this is a huge story to the viper nation.

Why is this car being called a 1992? Perhaps I'm missing something. The paint and wheels suggest 1996, as does the interior. The only thing I see on the car in the video that could be pre-1996 is the 4-rib intake.

Weird idea maybe, but what about the VCA/VPA opening up a small "museum"? Could maybe do something like the Corvette museum and owners could lend cars for periods of time to show off. Would actually make sense since a lot of owners store their cars over the winter months anyway. Why not store them where others could appreciate them as well?

Mopar- We have a long term goal to do this (VPA public section), our new warehouse was chosen partly becuase we want to get more "public" (and it was cheap), not sure it will happen in 2 weeks as I have heard is the timeline for this particular car.

I have also heard this is all a false story altogether... (aside from obviously NOT being a 92).

Good post, peterson is an interesting idea, but do they want a bunch of these?

Update- I have talked to several at the school and am awaiting a call from the head of the program trying to see what they are willing to do (they won't get to keep it as is). So are they willing to part with it, willing to see it dismantled, or what.

We have several ideas we will bring to SRT after we talk to the school, none are perfect, some are good, some tragic, all save most of the car, just we can't have teenagers joyriding a 500hp 200 mph car, I get Chrysler's position.

Out of curiosity, this was an ok idea when they donated the car in the first place. Not sure what students would learn on a Viper as opposed to a Neon or Intrepid... In any case, keep working to save these cars!
