Recommendation on rockers

Greetings,

I got the mod bug again and now seriously considering roller rockers and VEC 2 for my nearly stock GTS (high flow cats, borla, and smooth tubes). I've heard many great things about Jesel (sp?), T&D. I've also got a recommendation for Harland. I don't have a ton of cash to blow but I want to make sure I don't put crap in my car. What do you guys recommend for someone who rarely tracks but want the most bang for the buck - good power gain /reliability?

Thanks in advance

I've heard good thing about the Jesels, but they are very pricey. I have the T&D's on my car and haven't had any problems. I got a look at the Harlands at Macedo Motorsports and was impressed how stout they looked. For $600, the Harlands look to be the best value.

Thanks for the replies. Sean strongly recommended Harlands given it's low price and good performance. I am not too keen to hear that they wear out prematurely.

I have Jesels and love them, but as stated above they were pricey.

I am also considering which rollers to buy and would like to know if anyone has had trouble with the Harlands. Sean also recommended the Harlands to me with the high strength pushrods.
Thanks
Gary

Those of us that race our cars use T& D's - so what does that tell you.
Price is right
Reliable

If you run them on a street car - YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM CHECKED EVERY 5,000 MILES or you risk turning your engine into a pile of junk.

Eventually they will come loose and will turn off the valve, hit the valve spring, pop out the retainers and bingo - valve goes through the piston.

Check them every 5,000 miles and they will run problem free.

Gavin - this is news to me. How difficult is it to check??? I presume you have to remove the valve covers? Seems like a major PIA for 20-30rwhp...

Ranking as I understand it:

[*]Stock- ok but not going to hold up so long if the heads get a lot of work done [*]Harlands - an upgrade over stock and value to use if just doing a rocker R&R - stronger than stock and offer 1.7 ratio but those with heads done and strong springs will be better with the next 2 options [*]T&D - Next step up - been on the Vipers for several years [*]Jesel - Next step up in price.

Who all checks every 5k miles of street use and are there any who have found a way to get away from that with peace of mind or just blind faith?

who's using 3/8" pr?

Gavin:

I would like to know why the T&D's have to be checked every 5,000 miles.

Simple - T & D's on my 96 GTS
Engine making loud tapping noise
Stutoff the engine real damn quick
Pull Valve covers

One valve with no retainers - Rocker is sideways on the valve spring
I got lucky
The valve was not through the piston

Consult my Viper Tech

HE SAYS checkem every 5,000 miles - yep, one must pull the valve covers.
The question astounds me???????

So if you want the HP gain and the neat cam sound from the 1.7 ratio, and the cooling effect on the top end of your motor, whiuch is going to make the vavle train last longer THEN

Lets play roulette with a 12-15K motor or spend a few bucks once a year, for most street vipers (5,000 miles)and keep the motor safe!! :2tu:

Do you need to change the pushrods with the T&D's like you do with the harlands?
Do you have to check the Jesels every 5k or are they different?
Thanks

To get the proper geometry, 90% of the time you'll need new pushrods. Most need anywhere from 7.60 to 7.70 in length.

I have Harland's which Sean recommeneded. I don't track my car just street driving and a race every now and then. I also replaced the pushrods, springs, seals, guides, etc. etc. Pretty good gains on the dyno I think. Haven't had a problem with mine yet and had them installed about 3,000 miles ago.

So i assume the rockers dont come with the proper lengh pushrods? seems odd you'd have to replace them.

OK this does not make sense. First you say:

"Those of us that race our cars use T& D's - so what does that tell you.
Price is right
Reliable"

Then you say:

Simple - T & D's on my 96 GTS
Engine making loud tapping noise
Stutoff the engine real damn quick
Pull Valve covers

One valve with no retainers - Rocker is sideways on the valve spring

How is "won't make it 5k miles without a problem" = reliable. I realize aggressive parts call for aggressive maintenance, but the two posts do not seem to go together.

Check every 5K is news to me. Sounds like you had a bad original install. Anyone else including tuners think these come loose at 5K?

Original install was fine - this occurred at 42,000 miles on the T & D's
They were checked at 10K, 20K, 30K
Never found a problem so skipped it at 40K

Read the frigging post - the Viper Tech told me to check them every 5K and from then on I did.
On our race cars we check them every second race weekend!!!!
D  o what you want - your motor!!!

I did read the original frigging post and I'm not trying to start a fight. You went 42K without a problem so why check them every 5K? Seems like (Viper Tech Tax) overkill to me and an unnessary PITA. I think I'll check mine every 40K. Anyway, thanks for the information. :2tu:

Does anyone know what length push rod I need for Harland Sharp's 1.7 ratio for 2002 GTS? Thanks again!

sbkim,

There is no standard push rod length for every car. It needs to be measured on your car, and then ordered for your car.
