OK - I know this has been covered before, but what is the best stuff to use to get that d*** black exhaust residue off of the rear-especially the white stripes? I'm doing a complete detail and Zaino of my '96 GTS and, as usual, I leave the worst for last. Actually, I hate doing the under side of the side sills and the underside of the rear end the most. Help!

Bob,

Best product I have found to date is called Paint and Body scrub, and its made by meguires. It is clear coat safe, and is pretty much as close to miracle product as you can get. It will remove stains out of clear coats that you would never belive can be removed.

And yes it removes exhaust stains without a problem, just pour it on and scrub the more the merrier.

I just tried the WD40 and it does NOT work. It did absolutely nothing to the stains. I haven't had a chance to pick up some of the Meguires paint and body scrub, but that will be my next step, then the clay bar. What a pain!

Bob,

Just went out to the garage the stuff is actualy called:
-Clear Coat body scrub paint cleaner-

The Meguires stuff works, even on stubborn stains that don't want to come out. If the spot you are trying to remove does not budge take a large amount of the stuff put it on a cloth and just start rubbing it into the paint.

I use this stuff religiously on every stubborn stain on my car/trailer and it is just amazing. Even stuff that Zaino said would NOT come out did. I too was told to use wd40 and my experience was the same as yours, worthless.

PS- Use gloves if it is not too late, this stuff tends to make your hands feel dry.

I've used Simple Green repeatedly to remove those black stains, works great and doesn't seem to affect the paint.

Old remedy is to use the $5 polishing compound. Probably almost the same stuff as Mequires, except cheaper.

Then wax it

POLISHING COMPOUND takes it right off. Then a fresh coat of wax to seal. Took my 10 minutes to do the whole splatter scene on the rear end. VERY CHEAP AND EASY. MAKE SURE YOU USE POLISHING COMPOUND FOR CLEARCOAT FINISHES AND NOT RUBBING COMPOUND.
