Does it not move over to the reverse gate, or can you not shift up into reverse? Unless there is a mechanical issue with the shifter/linkage, you should be able to manually override the reverse lockout if that's whats causing your problem. It takes about 2-3 times the force of normal shifting, but can be done without issue. Reverse lockout solenoid has been known to go bad and is easily replaced.

Good luck.

Put the car in backwards next time. Just kidding. Hey Flexx, if you dont get it fixed, call Tomball Dodge where I get all my work done and they will fix it right the first time. Great tech. Harold is their over all service manager. Good luck with it.

Agreed, you should be able to force it if it just the lockout, if it won't go into gear, that would be another issue......haven't heard anything since yesterday, does that mean you got it in to reverse or did you make a door in the back of the garage

Check your fuses. A blown fuse can cause the reverse lockout solenoid to not function. Lots of folks have this issue after a header install (melted insulation on wires, causes short, causes blown fuse, causes solenoid to not work.) Don't know if you've got headers or not, but check the fuses anyway.

Anybody know where the reverse lockout solenoid is located. I have the same exact issue. I have to muscle it into reverse to get it in gear. Is this something I can do in my garage and where is the best place to buy this solenoid?

Hi mate.the rev lockout solenoid is just below the shifter in the gearbox body.see the long
large thing bolted to the case,it has a small electrical plug on the end.this is a 99 rt/10 g/box.but seems to look the same as an srt .you will need to get the car in the air, take off the big tunnel plate, then you should be able to get to the solenoid.chuck tator for the part
or go to your nearest dealer.:2tu:
ps you could check you have voltage at the plug with the key on

Okay, thanks, just to clarify one more time, the solenoid is the device below the blue plate in that picture? If it is you are saying to check and see if there is power there, if there is then you are saying the solenoid is bad? If it doesn't have power, its a grounding issue or fuse problem perhaps?

If its the solenoid and it needs replacing, does the bolt need to come off the side of the gearbox or is it just something that screws in and that bolt doesn't need replacement?

Hi bud
ok pic time
You must be registered for see images attach

heres the thing.if you get in the car and turn on the ignition you should have voltage
to the solenoid.important bit.less than 5mph,the pcm provides a ground for the solenoid
(energized) and allows shifting into reverse.greater than 5 mph the solenoid is deactivated
and prevents the trans from being shifted into reverse.
i would er more on a bad connection at the plug than a fault with the pcm.more likely its the thing that has to do the work ,the solenoid.two things ,its got to have voltage ,and its got to have a ground.all this while its stopped key on.
lastly the solenoid is threaded into the left side of the trans.if you look at the pic,it may undo right where the arrow point is.the new solenoid should tell you more on that.
hope you /and the op get it sorted :2tu: Dave

Great information. I will check it out and see if it has power first. If it does, I will replace with a new one. Thanks for all the diagrams and knowledge.

Had the trans removed a few times for clutches. Once in a while the tech forgets to plug it back in. Same issue.

Good luck.

Problem Fixed!

I purchased a new reverse lockout solenoid from the Dodge dealer. Spent my $130 and proceeded to use my dads car lift to get the car up and go to work. After getting the bellypan off the car, I realized the solenoid had nothing plugged into it.

I looked all around and after 15 minutes realized the harness that plugs into it was zip tied to my fuel lines running along side the tranny. I believe a vendor who I will leave unidentified for now was the one who did the zip tie when putting in a lightweight flywheel and never plugged it back in after the install.

I cut the zips and plugged it in started the car to test it and it went into reverse like it should.

I reattached the bellypan and was in business like 1.2.3.

Its rare things go this smoothly for me when it comes to auto repairs but if anybody needs a new solenoid I have one and will sell it at a discount.
