96 of course!! Last of the pure roadsters...Got an HP bump to 415...Got the GTS aluminum suspension...Ultra kewl factory striping schemes...Limited production due to the start of the GTS production...

Seriously it really depends on your wants/desires, and what you value...The side pipe cars appeal to many folks...The Gen II power bump and refinements appeal to many...Roll Up side windows appeal to many folks...AS you go newer and more expensive, you get air bags and ABS. I believe the 96 RT is the last model without airbags.

After the 2 significant changes noted above you may want to consider '01 as the first year of ABS.

This one is easy '99.
Last year before the creampuffs, first year with 18" wheels, has all the comfort features needed, and is available in the best color of them all SILVER.

Who cares about ABS!
I'm partial to my 96. Only thing I would trade in for is side windows(glass instead of curtain)But then again I like the curtains. Gives the car that real roadster feel. 96 has the same suspension as the GTS so it has a little bit of both. Better than the previous years.

96 is the best. I agree with the reasons in the above posts. I searched for over a year for just the right one and I love it.

The fastest magazine tested Viper so far was the '00 R/T10 which went 11.78@118mph. I prefer the GenII R/T10s, and ABS would be a plus if it's not a huge price premium.

Clearly the 98, it has the lumpy cam setup, it was the first to get the lighter manifold, many have the later-model radiator fan, has the airbag cutoff switch and the alarm shutoff (not found in earlier models), doesn't have fru-fru power side mirrors, and since it is a year older than 99, should be cheaper.

I am in the same predicament as Foster, what year to choose. I definitely like the RT/10 over the GTS just because I want a convertible. Not quite ready for the 2003.
My main issues have been ABS, how difficult is to have controlled braking in this machine? I sold an '87 Vette 4+3, had ABS but no traction control which I never needed anyway, learnt to control the throttle and always drove it hard.
My question to the drivers of pre '97, how comfortable are you with opening the throttle on your machines without too much concern on losing traction?

I bought a Gen I for a few reasons....
1. Yellow, at the time I couldn't get yellow unless I bought a 94 or 95.
2. Side pipes, I like the way they look and I felt it was an important part of Viper.
3. No windows or door handles I wanted the true roadster experience the way the show car intended it to be. No flame to Gen II owners. Again, at the time, I felt it was an important part of Viper.
I LOVE my Gen I. Would I want the extra 50HP of the Gen II? Sure, but I can always get upgrades and have more than that 50HP. Comfort however is an issue. The Gen I is really crude, I wanted crude because this is not my primary car. I dont need ABS or traction control.
Having said all that, I do plan on purchasing a 2002 graphite GTS. That will be an addition to my Gen I not a replacement.
If you drive a Mercedes and want something like that then you will need a Gen II and that is a FAR cry from a Mercedes. If you dont care having the wind and sand and everything else on the road in your face while you experience a bone jarring rough ride then go for the Gen I. Ok so I exaggerate a little

I have a 96 Vette with TC. I can feel it kick in from time to time, usually when I pull out from a parking lot onto a road in wet conditions. It pushes back on the gas pedal so you get some feedback that it's working. I would say it's a worthwhile but not necessary thing.
My 94 Viper, of course, has no TC. I haven't driven my Viper in heavy rain conditions so I don't know how bad that would be. My Viper drives OK on wet roads. It would probably be a good thing to have but I don't think many folks will drive their Viper in the kind of conditions where it would be needed. I wouldn't buy a later Viper just for the TC feature. Side pipes are worth more than TC on a Viper IMO.

Congrats on the decision. Hope you've found a nice one for sale. Not a bad idea to run a Carfax so you don't get surprised with a reincarnated wreck after all.
