IIRC, past posts mentioned scuffing rotors to remove residue before installing EBC Green pads in order to enable them to operate properly, i.e., to eliminate squeaking and brake dust. Am I recalling this correctly? Also, is this just necessary when switching from stock to EBC pads, or from any pad to EBC pads? Currently I have brake man #3s (i.e., "brake dust #3s" LOL)...

Anything else I should be aware of regarding pad swaps?

You should clean your rotors before switching to any other pad, as a rule of thumb. Two things to consider is that new rotors virtually all come with a new , enviromentally friendly coating, and this needs to be washed off ( yep , good old soap and water )before putting on new pads. Also, most pads use different compounding to achieve their goals ( quick clamping force for the street, endurance for the track, high temp potential , etc ), so it is beneficial to clean the rotor when you switch. Some pads may leave a glazing from too much or even not enough heat, and that will often render the next pad less effective.

Ditto what Bill said. Also, don't freak out if you get a little dust (kinda light colored) and a tiny bit of squeal at first. This may or may not happen, but if it does, it should go away within about 300 miles of normal driving. Mine did. pete the ex glass guy and hot rodder but had to paint my "greens" black.....wow.....that was quite the color combination...red car...green pads...MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I just installed a set of EBC greens all the way around and new rotors this weekend. Took it for it's first drive tonight. No squeek and very little dust. I didn't have to worry about cleaning the old pad material off the rotors though since they were new. But these EBC greens are sweet. I painted them red since I also painted my calipers red. It really sets the wheels and cross-drilled rotors off.

I will be installing the EBC's all the way around this weekend.
What kind of paint did you use to cover up the lovely green color? Will any old flat black spray paint work?

Plus the car has 102 miles on it so I hope that the rotors will not need alot of cleaning...

Steve, I used some VHT brand 900 degree hi temp spray paint made specifically for brake calipers and rotor hats and stuff like that. It is resistant to brake and brake fluid chemicals. I'm sure there are other hi temp paints out there, but this one says it is specifically for brakes and cost about $8 a can. The finish turned out really good. It comes in red, black, blue and maybe a few other colors. But, it was hard to find so you might have to order some online or something. A chain of high performance shops in my area carried it.

Even with only 102 miles, the rotors will need a good scuffing...just scuff them up a bit to get any of the factory pad residue off...

FYI, I know most of you do not put a lot of miles on your vipers, but those of you who use them as a daily driver have to watch wear. A set of reds only lasted about 9,000 miles for me and I believe they wear slower than the greens.....

I had EBC Greens on the front before the brake man #3s, drove 10k miles (including ~2k to FL and back, probably limited braking), and Tom Sessions noted that only about 1/16 had worn off in that time?! A real testament to the durability of EBC Greens I'd say.

Oh, and another thing of course you want to mask off the actual brake pad lining, but I also masked off the area on the outside of the pad where the outer pad contacts the rear caliper in 2 spots. I did this because someone else posted on here that they painted their pads and they stuck to the caliper when they tried to get them off. You can't see the front pads through the caliper so you only need to paint the rears.

I had the EBC greens installed about a month or so ago.. i had the viper tech do it since i had to have the rotors resurfaced (lot's of miles).. Got tired of cleaning the chrome BBS's every time i drove the car..
Result's are pretty good: no squeal, much less dust. I didn't notice any big difference as far as brake performance though.
I did paint my rotors and brake pads with some hi temp aluminum paint before reinstalling. The surfacing of the rotors took off the excess paint on the rotor but, i was told that you can just paint them and the brake pad will clean them off quickly.

Did you use some of that anti-squeek lubricant on the back of your pads and where they slide against the calipers. And also on the pins that hold the pads in? I did and no squeek or squeel what-so-ever. Knock on wood.

To asnwer Sean..no I did not use anything like that.I was in contact with both Jon B (from whom I bought them) and the distributor. They kept telling me that I installed them correctly and that with time they would stop squealing. I guess I need to give them more time. It's no big deal, as the wheels do stay much cleaner..but I would like to be rid of the squealing too.

Well I'm not sure what happened. I put on EBC greens-now there is more dust. Wheela are black in just an hour of driving. Another buddy has the same problem with them. Anyone else?
