Hi folks,

Need some input.
I've just been informed I will need to leave the country for a couple of years to go on a foreign assignment.

Big question is what to do with the snake ?
Last year I picked up a really nice black 94. Since I had a long (er) term vision with this car I did some investments to get it mint. Net, this is totally the Viper that I want (apart from a black 03

)

My options :
1] Sell it. My sense is that this is a bad moment to sell. The market seems to be slow. If I sell, maybe wait till spring ?
2] Store it. Company would pay. How would Vipers hold up in a 2 to 3 year storage process ? Any advice ? Another thing that I will need to take into account will be depreciation. By the moment I come back, this will be a 10 year old car. Is the GenI going to become a classic (i.e. prices will stabilize in the mid thirties) or will they just go down ? I realize nobody has a crystal ball, but all input is welcome.

Store it and come stay with me! If the company will pay why not, remember no more RT/10's.The price might bottom out for a while but it will only go back up and up (I hope)I have no idea on how to store it. I'm sure some one will have the right answers on the Forum soon.
Good luck in what ever you do.

I vote to store it. The Gen I and Gen II Vipers will become collector cars within 10 years. The SRT-10 will help that happen because it looks good and the Gen I and Gen II Vipers look GREAT!

I could never sell a Viper. If I had a place for it I'd let you keep it with me and I'd run it once a week to keep it in good shape for you. And it would be safe with me since I have two of my own already.

If you decide to store it, send it down here and I'll keep an eye on it.

Be smart and sell it. The car will not go up in value for another 10 years. Why lose 15K? Sell it and stop you losses... Plus storing a car for 3 year will make it rust to junk. Just some honest, sound advice.

I vote for storing the car. Some storage suggestions for a two year period would include the following:

Flush and replace the coolant with 50% Dexcool -- then use a sacrificial anode radiator cap. These radiator caps are available through Roe Racing. This will help prevent cooling system corrosion when sitting for 2 years.

Flush and change the brake fluid.

Engine oil and differential oil should be changed.

When the car is driven to the final storage spot -- "fog" the cylinders with oil before shutting the engine down. This proceedure is in the beginning of the maintenance manual and is very simple.

If your tires are near the end of their tread life, park the car in it's storage spot but be prepared to replace the tires when you get back. They'll probably be flat spotted. If your tires are new, get heavy duty jackstands with rubber pads and raise the car so that the wheels are a few inches off the ground.

Disconnect the battery and remove it from the car. I wouldn't use a battery maintainer for a continuous 2 year period.

Cover the car with a decent fabric cover. The storage garage should be cool and dry. If the concrete the car is parked on shows any sign of dampness, put down a large sheet of plastic before parking the car on the spot. This will help prevent condensation. I'd do this even if the car were raised on jackstands.

There may be other suggestions -- but looking out for the cooling system, tires and battery are the bit points...

Yves,

If it is the car you wanted and you have made it the way you want
I'd keep it.

By the way I used to live in Hillsboro, I miss the area, but not the rain!

If the car is stored properly, it will not "rust to junk".
You can check with Jon B. about storing it properly.

Good luck,

I say KEEP IT if its the car of you dreams like mine is I would never sell.
If its a professional storage company they should take care of every thing and keep it in a tempature (cant spell) controlled environment so it will not rust..

DEFINITELY sell it! When you get back you can look into getting an SRT/10. You'll be disappointed if you don't. The Viper is moving into a different direction & you definitely want to keep up. That's just my opinion.

Dang Yves, If I'd known you looked that good, I would have made sure to hook up with you for a cruise this summer!

Being local, if you store it, I might be able to be convinced to blow the carbon out every once and awhile for you when I feel the need for an open top

Here's my opinion. The market for RT/10s is probably not going to get much better in the next couple of years. If it's the car you really want, I'd hang onto it, not as an investment, but because it's the car you always wanted and why sell at a loss if you can get fun from it in another couple of years by picking up where you left off. From your note though, it sounds like you have your sights set on an SRT/10, in which case you'd probably be better of selling it now before the value goes down any further and get an '04/'05 SRT/10 when you get back. Then give me a ride in it.

I know you didn't include this option, but why not take it with you. I've lived in Germany and the Middle East and a Viper would be a blast in either (can you say autobahn). The shipping charges to Europe should run $1000-$1200. Good luck.

My apologies - without knowing I created quite some confusion.Never received so much private E-mails through the Viper website.
The girl in the picture is my girlfriend, not me.
To put things straight : we started dating before I ever owned the Viper. She is a Nike colleague. Sales Manager for Latin America. Makara was right, I am the guy from the R1 Forum. Good catch !

Here's a picture taken just after we picked up the Viper :

And this is the one you most probably all want to see :

So maybe a better question is, do you need to store your girl friend? My original offer still stands

We are both in our late thirties. We passed the sneaker phase
smile.gif

We use them to work out though.

The car : I'm going to sell. Will hurt, but had stuff like that happen before.
Just too many uncertainties on when I will come back.
Ideal excuse to upgrade to a BLACK SRT when I come back. Can't help it, love that car.
