I am new to the Viper world, just picked up a 94. When I am driving the car sometimes it will "pop out" of 2nd, or 4th, it doesn't even want to engage in 6th. I am thinking about installing the B&M ripper.

2 questions.
1: has anyone seen this issue before?
2: is this something the ripper may fix itself?

Thanks,

Bruce

do yourself a favor and save the money on the shifter for now. this is not the cause of your problem. i have nothing against the B&M shifter, in fact, it is in my GTS. but the shifter is not gonna change the fact that your syncros are F'd up. i assume you have no warrenty in the 94 so get ready to pay up sucka. it is steep but not too bad. By the way, SHAME ON YOU FOR EVEN ATTEMPTING TO PUT YOUR CAR IN 6TH GEAR. my car never even sees fifth unless i am going north of 150mph. lol

He's right. In all likelihood your heading for a tranny rebuild. Had a similar problem with popping out of third gear frequently. Had the tranny rebuilt and good as new. It's not the end of the world, you have to find a competent shop that can work on the T-56. (And lift your car properly...

From what I understand this can be caused by resting your hand on the shifter when driving.

I'm sure everyone already knows not to do this (but I'm bored at work right now ;) )

Welcome Bruce, NO EMAIL IN YOUR PROFILE, COULD NOT REPLY DIRECTLY TO YOU.

I disagree with 'synchro' answer. I believe it is the shift forks themselves, due to the symptoms you describe. I've seen it a LOT. You did not state MILES.

A RIPPER WILL make it WORSE, esp your year. (Call to ask why, no time to type.)

Simple cheap things but worth a try:
1) Check you MOTOR MOUNTS and TRANNY MOUNT for integrity and tightness.
2) Change fluid to a Full-Syn, even Mopar. $80/fluid. Could result in more positive shifts.

[Still have Problems, we have USED trannys from $1595.......]

I paid more than that to have mine rebuilt, but at least I knew it was mine and only had 9K miles on it at the time.

Jon is correct. They changed the forks from cast iron to steel. The 94 definitely had the cast forks. I believe it was an upgrade at the same time as the gen II. My 95 had the trans replaced for that exact reason. The cause - powershifting.
