The highlight of the Motor City Viper Owners Wine Cruise in northern Michigan this past weekend was the time we got to spend in club member Dan McDavid's garage. Dan, a retired Chrysler executive, has two Vipers (a GTSR and the last built blue and white GTS) and several other interesting cars. He hosted 40-50 of us in his super garage by converting his hoist into a large table for hors d'oeures, opening up the beverage coolers and turning up the jukebox. You may have seen this garage in one of the editions of Viper magazine earlier this year.
First, there is Dan's house, a major log cabin facing Lake Michigan. That garage on the right can hold five cars, but that's not the fancy one!
Across the driveway is the special garage. It looks over private inland Duck Lake. This is a view up from the lake, showing the 1,800 sq. ft. guest apartment on the left and Dan's office on the right.
You approach the garage by winding down from the main drive. The steps lead up to the two bedroom guest apartment above. The large decks look out over the lake.
You have to drive through the garage to the road that leads back up to the main drive to get out. Here's a shot of the interior (we didn't eat off those floors, but we could have!). The Vipers on the left are Dan's and the ones in the middle were fellow club members who were parked in a line through the garage.
Here's a view of the club cars extending on up the drive from the other side.
Here is another view of Dan's Vipers. The garage is laid out with compressed air and electricity to each car position. The lighting is fantastic. Every tool and spare tire is neatly located in its special place throughout the garage.
Dan also has three Ferrari's, a Masserati, and wonderfully restored old MG for his wife.
Here's a view down from Dan's office -- the opposite side of the office leads to a deck overlooking Duck Lake. What a great place!
We are forever greatful to Dan for sharing his special place with us. He's a super friendly guy you can talk cars with until moon goes down and sun comes back up. He's set the bar extremely high for those of us who think we have the guts to try to live our dreams!
