Does anyone know how much of a pain it would be to install the "Engine Start" button on a Gen II? My father has an SRT-10 Ram and that thing is too cool! The only thing that concerns me is the electrical aspect.

Well, now that I think back, I quit using it because when using my autostart remote, it would crank the car too hard (you know when the starter makes that noise when you try to crank a car thats already started). Back then, I used my autostart all the time, so we ended up disconnecting the switch. I've since quit using the autostart and just been cranking as normal for a while. You've given me the idea to hook the switch back up just for the heck of it.

That wouldn't be very hard at all. A simple relay would work fine. I haven't looked but is there a nice spot for the button in a gen1/2 ?

Of course, like a gen3.....if you are turning the key anyway............... :D
I know...it still is cool ;)

Not that I know how to install it, but the prior owner of my Gen II GTS installed a push start. He put it where the cigarette lighter is. I will try to get a photo up.

Not to say that it isn't cool, but what is the deal with the start buttons on cars these days? I mean, it's a car for gosh sakes, not a blender...

I have to admit, you made me laugh, the blender comment. :rolaugh:

I know this isn't a Viper, but for the last car I built, it needed a button to start it. Personally, I would like a button to spin the motor to prime it, then ignition secondary. Here's a goofy video I had to make for a buyer. The problem was that the 572 c.i. / 9.4L Hemi could kick back and strip the ring gear teeth if you tried to spin the starter and hit the ignition simultaneously with a key. It happened, not so fun taking it apart.. I needed to spin the motor, build up inertia, then hit the ignition. It was a normally aspirated motor, approximately 800 hp.

That's the story on my hot rod blender! :2tu:

Other than a button to start the car, I do prefer a key in the dash like my wife's Corvette rather than the steering column ignition. Yet, it's not perfect because we did have a recall on the Corvette, there is an electric solenoid in the steering column that locks the steering when the car is parked (since there isn't a mechanical ignition lock in the column), and it had to be disabled because it may accidently engage the electric solenoid steering lock at low speed while driving..

Yeah, I though it was lame the Gen3's still had to turn the key. I drove my friend's SRT in a couple autox's... spun out once and the engine died. Took me a good 5-10 seconds to remember to turn the key and re-press button.

I like the cars where the key is a passive device that the car detects and will allow you to push the start buton.

The passive device sounds good with a button. How does it work for accessories other than the ignition, i.e. windows, radio etc. ?

I went to Honda's website and ordered an S-2000 Start button and had my stereo guy install it in the cigeratte lighter. Start button $40.00 Labor $50 bucks.

It works great. The key is in and turned to the "on" position then press and go:drive:
Sorry SRT-10 guys but my button is bigger:headbang:
