Hey new to the club as well as the forums so hello to all. I have a question...I have an 03 SRT 10 and like many of you think the stock stero is weak. I went to a very reputable car stereo place and they have never done work on the newer generation Vipers. Has anyone done a custom or upgraded stero to their 03/04 Vipers and if so what did you do and can you post pics please. Thanks!!!

WEAK!!!... The stock stereo in SRT ROCKS!!!. Compared to stereo's in previous Vipers, the SRT is a huge improvement.

I understand, just as people will want to improve the handling, and power output of out cars, there will be also people who wish to improve the performance of the sound system, but calling the stock system weak is out of line.

However, just as in most factory systems, high line speakers, amps, and head units can be installed to "kick it up a little".

PS Welcome to the club.

One true weakness in the SRT sound system is that it doe's not have very good mid range, and the very deep bass is not there. Lower mid bass is exellent, but considering the layout of the car, its very good. If you have listened to some of the Bose sound systems that are in cars, one thing they have is a true flat responce. This is very hard to a achieve and costly. This can spoil you. Your ears notice it quickly, and the SRT is very absent in this area. Most sound shops know nothing about this, but if it's more power power you want they can help, for thats all they are good for,(selling noise)in my opinion.

I've noticed that as time goes, you do adjust somewhat to the absent mid range, and lack of sub bass, and by this I don't mean excesive amounts of sub base, but a balance of it, whith the rest of the music. I will explore this soon, but as far a butchering up the car, and coming up with what may be worse, no way until I find someone that knows the way a system should be. But this sound system would rate very poor when compared to the likes of Lexus,BMW,MB,etc, and I not so much because of power, but responce.

Maybee a better set of mid's might help.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I am comparing the stereo to the Bose system my sister's Vette has as well as my Dad's Benz and my Mom's Infiniti. Well some work has already been done to my car and it made a ton of difference. I have 2 Phoenix Gold Tantrum amps embedded in the trunk real clean, one to power the hi/lo's and the other to power an 8inch which has a custom fiberglass enclosure in the passenger footwell. Made a world of difference.

I too, think that the stereo is not very good in the SRT. It's all highs and lows with no midrange, as Skip said before. I find that the enclosure rattles a lot as well. I do differ with some of you in that I think that the Bose system is no better. I had a Bose in an old ZR-1 that I owned. The amps for the speakers burned out every 12 months. It was the worst part of the car (besides the fact that it wasn't a Viper). I'd like to find a moderately priced solution to fix the speaker problem in the SRT without putting in separate amps etc.

Good mids for the car are about 400.00 a pair, and these are first rate, but that don't mean it will sound all that much better, because acoustics have a lot to do with it. An E-Q would help, and and amp with adj. crossover points. Good amps are fairly cheap, its the speakers that will cost. Upgrade the subs, and you'l take care of the rattle, but not the missing sub bass. You would have to have a bit more space, and it fires to close to you in the car, therefore cancelling out the sub bass.

As for Bose, the old Corvettes, are not a good example of Bose, even the new one. You must hear a Bose system that is in a car like the Infinity Q-45. Bose put there best in this car. I remember the old Bose systems in Vettes, and they were lousey.

"All highs, no lows...must be bose."
Bose systems run all over the gammut, from great to lousey. Some of there earlier home speaker systems were truly impressive, however lately they seem to be better at marketing than at producing impressive quality systems.

SRTaj, The SRT sound system sounds much much better with the Viper Windbaffle in place. It reflects the tweeter and bass sound into the cocokpit. That plus the lower level of turbulence with the topdown are very obvious improvements. For a relatively very low cost. Bob
