I'm gearing up for the Sand Hills Open Road Challenge this Summer.

http://www.sorcrace.com

One of the events is the "one mile shoot-out" where cars compete to see who can have the fastest top speed in a standing mile.

According to the race folks, nobody in a stock Viper has ever broke 160mph. Motor Trend's tests of the SRT-10 came off with 167mph. I'm wondering if 160mph is possible in a stock Viper for a mere mortal.

Anyone have an idea of what a good time would be for a stock Viper in the mile? The only performance mod I've got on my car is the K&N filters. I figure that should just about make up for the added weight of the Autoform roll bar. Any hints as to achieving a good time (other than step on the gas and shift at the red line.)

I wish I had some advice for you. I can't say that I have ever tried it. Let us know how it goes. 'Race Folks' can be proven wrong. Good Luck!

Maybe a 3.55 gear change for an otherwise stock SRT-10 would offer a few mph's. No doubt it will be a hoot just to give it a good run. Look forward to seeing your posted results. Good luck!

Bill Bagshaw ran the one mile Shootout in Ely in his stock '96 GTS at 157.8 mph and the half mile at 127.0 mph. This was at an elevation of about 6500 feet (much higher than Sand Hills). I would think he would have broke 160 at a considerably lower elevation.

Nino Valmassoi did 132 in the half mile with his '03 SRT with headers/exhaust. If he had ran the mile (tech limited), I'm pretty certain he would have broke 160. :2tu:

I clearly shows that it takes serious horsepower to get some high numbers in the mile.

What is the elevation that you will be running?I have run 165.5,bone stock.

Elevation is 2706 feet above sea level.

Your numbers are in-line with Motor Trend's numbers which put the Viper at 167.6 in the standing mile. I don't know where the Motor Trend tests took place or what the elevation or temp/humidity conditions were.

I'm told that no "stock" car of any sort has broken the 160mph barrier at Sandhills. It would be nice for a Viper to be the first one. I'd like to practice, but don't know where I could find a mile of flat road around here to practice on safely. I suppose I should start working on my 1/4 mile techniques (Bandimere, here I come), and hopefully some of the skills will translate across.

It should be close. The Motor Trend test was done at sea level.A rule of thumb is 2mph per 1000 ft,on normally aspirated cars.. above.Mine was done at 1000 ft.I think you can do it.Dont blast the start. You are not running against time.Just a little wheel spin, then hammer it when you know it wont break loose. What is the surface?

I was in Ely earlier this month and there was a "near stock" SRT/10 (headers and high flow cats) that ran 130+ in the half mile, he was not teched for a higher speed, so I don't think he did the mile.
There was a modified GTS that did 180+ in the mile, this was all at 6,400 feet.
I did 161.5 in my modded Z06, a Z06 with NOS and an SC took second at 172+

I hope this helps?
