Mopar Power Steering Fluid (SM) (Mopar #4883077); Redline (per many); Mopar PSF "All Climate" (#5010304AA) (per Tom, fluid deity)
I've been using Redline in my '97 GTS.

My service manual clearly states that ATF is not to be used. However, when I went to my dealer to pick up some Mopar Power Steering fluid, I was shown a service note from Dodge which said to ignore the service manual. Now, Dodge says that for my 2000 GTS the proper fluid is Mopar ATF+4 automatic transmission fluid. I don't know if it is the same for all years, but it seemed very clear that Dodge has changed their mind, since 2000, on what is best for my car. Incidentally, Dodge still carries the Mopar Power Steering fluid; they just don't specify it for Vipers.

Dealership just flushed mine and replaced with the ATF+4 I believe

I run "Redline" in mine also.
Get the vent tube for PS cap as well if you don't already.

on the contrary, my dealership has sold me the MoparPowerSteeringFluid the past two times ive been up there.
Perhaps the Wizard could chime in if the PSF is being phased out and replaced with ATF on certain year vipers.

ATF+4 does not work! Use MOPAR P/S fluid #4883077 in ALL GEN's! We work on hundreds of Vipers and they all have this fluid, never had a P/S problem with them.

So I got a question on this now. The wizard clearly recommends MOPAR P/S fluid #4883077 and I've heard a few others suggest Redline.
Where do I purchase the Mopar P/S fluid? From a dealership? I did find a link to the website of a local dealer but it has a different part # and says it replaces #4883077, but maybe one of you can verify this "replacement" isn't just the ATF+4 crap. http://parts.machaikonline.com/oe-mopar/4883077

Very good question. A google search shows folks saying that the new part # you link to translates to an ATF+4 spec. I would suggest PM'ing or emailing Chuck (Viper Wizard ) or Dan ( Viper Specialty ) or Dan Cragin for their opinion if they don't catch this updated thread,. As they say, the model year matters.

FYI, Dodge (subsequently SRT) used ATF+4 (also called Power Steering+4) as the factory fill for Vipers power steering starting in 2004 (yes, it's reddish). Sadly, the service manuals did NOT recognize same through 2006 (can't remember about 2008 & 2009 DVD's).
Be careful with your decisions !!

My concern now at this point though is that I need this stuff today because my cap popped off (as it does) and I lost some fluid. While it does still read on the stick, it's at the very bottom well below the cold line so I really need to add some, but I don't want to go pick up some of the wrong red **** from Dodge.
Talon, I may have missed it...BUT, what color is the fluid in your reservoir? If clear, go with the recommended MOPAR Power Steering Fluid #4883077.
If it is red, you have a more complex decision to make since many track-rats used Redline P/S fluid (red) for good reasons...especially in Gen I cars. If you are the original owner, sorting out "reds" seems easy...UNLESS an uninformed tech changed the fluid (which has happened at low volume dealerships...especially with all of the uncorrected and conflicting info in the service manuals
I use OEM fluids in our Vipers UNLESS there is a specific application to which another product would be better suited.
Specifically, our street driven 95, 96, 97, 99, and 01 Vipers use the MOPAR Power Steering Fluid #4883077
Our 2003 was upgraded to ATF+4 AFTER the cooling module was completed. Our 2008 and 2010 Vipers use (CAME WITH) ATF+4.

It's clear I just checked it earlier. It has been kept all stock (no uninformed techs touching it). I have some potentially disappointing news for you that I just figured out. As mentioned above, I did a quick search for that Mopar P/S number 4883077 and Mopar has officially replaced that with another parts #68218064AA. It turns out that parts number is an ATF+4 stuff (red). So clearly they still don't have their stuff together.
As we know the red stuff will work, but it's just not as efficient of a lubricant to keep things running and cool. I called Chuck and got him on the phone. He is up-to-date on this replacement that Mopar is offering and basically suggested it is better to just go buy a name brand power steering fluid (Chrysler spec approved) from my local parts store. I will be doing this today since I need the fluid. Not sure the brand I'm going to pick up but I'll find a good name brand fluid.

What I found on my last purchase 2 months ago was that Valvoline PS Fluid was the only one I saw that had the actual Chrysler approved spec number labeled on it. ( MS 5391 ) (my car = 2002 )
Prestone and other house brands just said "meets Chrysler spec", which means absolutely nothing helpful nowadays to a Viper owner.

That's basically what I just ran into yesterday. I went to O'Reilly's and they really only carried Valvoline anyway and it did say it meets Chrysler Spec MS 5391 so I went with it. There were other no-name brands, but I didn't want to trust that.

I want to change the steering fluid of my 1996 GTS, and Dodge sell me an ATF4 fluid for this.
I checked in the technical maintenance manual and see that it is not recommended to put any kind of automatic transmission fluid.
So now I'm looking for a good replacement fluid, but which one ?
Redline ? Valvoline (can I find this one in France ?)

The Mopar part # recommended above shows up in several vendors internet pages, if you google search for '4883077 mopar'.
I'm guessing that killyox did not ask for that specific number; or, the guy at the parts counter did not know or understand what the difference in fluids is. This is not an unusual problem. I have had the same issue with a Honda dealer when there were two different types of transmission fluid in stock, and my S2000 uses the less commonly used one.
I do ask for this part number, but my dealer sold me this ATF4 fluid ...
In fact, in France (and maybe all Europe ??) Dodge is not present any more on the market.
The Fiat group in now the owner of the ex-Dodge dealer network, and they simply stopped to propose a lot of Mopar product.
They create an "equivalence" list, and the result is that the dealer cannot propose something else than what Fiat estimate as an equivalent product (which is not true in all the cases).
I think I will simply bye a quality steering fluid and use it (but not an ATF4 fluid).

You are right, I can buy it on internet.
Generaly, it will come from the US, so buy just a bottle of steering fluid (about $15) and paid $70 in shipping... not for me
This is what I just bought and used. Works perfectly and it's not ATF.
