Mark,
You should be covered, even though you didn't call to put it on your policy. I know my insurance company gives a 30 day grace period to get it registered. I think it's a federal, but not too sure.

While I contact my insurer before all said purchases, she always assures me that I am covered for up to 5 working days of the purchase...call YOUR company, you may be OK.

Good luck.

Thats right, 5 days. At least by Farmers insurance.
And as long as you have at least one vehicle with "full coverage"

Mark...was it registered ? Is this the first car you have ever purchased? What were you thinking? Did you purchase from a dealer or private? I bet next car you purchase you will have an insurance binder before you leave with it.

Mark, where did it get stolen from? There are quite a few of us in this part of the world. Also, everyone is correct in that you should be covered by your current insurance. They are also right, that it is not smart to not make that the first thing you do when you buy a car.

"just bought my 1998 viper"....does this mean a couple of days ago, 6-7 days ago, a couple weeks ago, etc? I agree with the others that if this was purchased within the last 5 days you probably are covered. 6 days or longer, you are probably SOL. I've got a feeling Mark is gone for a while, probably changing his pants.

If its not a big insurance company, or if you haven't been with them for a long time, then they most likely won't cover it, especially since they are in the business to make money.

Why should an insurance company...ANY insurance company...be required to cover your mistake? You didn't register it with them. Why should they have to pay to fix your screwup? You messed up, not them. They did absolutely nothing wrong.

You did though...

With insurance companies being the CROOKS that they are (yes, I believe EVERY insurance company is crooked as hell) I hope you are covered. With all the $$ they rip off from people, and then try to wiggle out of paying most every claim, I'd love to see one have to pay out $50k on a policy that they never made a penny off of.

Where's justice and the law when you need them? Insurance? Why? Why doesn't our justice system administer justice in cases like this? Why isn't the thief responsible for restitution? If there are any fines you can bet the courts are going collect on those. Why can't the courts force the criminal to pay the victim for damages?

Nope. Some judge will collect court costs and then sentence the criminal to parol and the victim gets screwed...again.

Why is it courts can order wages garnished for child support but they don't do it for situations like this?

Chuck98RT10: Some people "steal" their own cars. It happens rarely, but it happens. You take your $50K car, claim it was stolen, part out your car, sell the parts quickly for $25K, and then get a new identical $50K car.

Finally got it !

You do realize that insurance companies are why you are able to get a loan on a car... or are able to obtain a mortgage on a house. Otherwise, interest rates would be sky high, and credit standards would be almost impossible to be approved.

Without insurance companies, our economy would slow to a crawl.

Sounds like an insurance agent talking... :D

I was thinking that it sounded like "the voice of reason" personally.

Honestly, should the insurance company have covered you if you didn't add the car, then took it out and smashed the car into the side of a school bus, which then flipped over and landed on Donald Trump's limo, causing a massive fire and multiple explosions, and a huge amount of fatalities?

You didn't add the car. You screwed up. The insurance company shouldn't have to pay ANYTHING.

Deriving this theory from prevailing market forces, including your own observations: If there were no insurance companies, interest rates would rise to the EXACT same level that would equal what you are paying in interest plus the additional costs you pay to your agent. Maybe less, as there will be one less hand in the "for profit" till.

In any case, I think this post is BS, and I'll be the first to say it. The guy registered the day he claimed his car was stolen; one post, no pre-buyer questions like most people new to the board. I think this is post-bait, and someone is having a good laugh somewhere.

I don't see where that addresses my post. I'm referring to caught criminals paying restitution to the victim. In your example the victim is obviously the insurance company. Soooo your point is?

You were asking why insurance was necessary, and why can't the criminal pay. I am just saying that it is impossible to catch everyone, and sometimes the "victims" are the criminals. Insurance is a necessary evil.

Point #1 disagree. Insurance provides the "guarantee" to the bank that the insured vehicle/or home will be "replaced" or "repaired" in the event of a covered loss. Thus the bank can transfer that risk to the insurance company. The interest rate would increase to a point where keeping the risk of loss was properly covered for the bank. For an insurance company, the risk is covered by the premium charged spread across many insureds.... actuarily calculating that some insureds will have claims, some will not. Hopefully adhering to established underwriting principals will dictate that a reasonable profit is maintained, while paying presented claims. However, an underwriting loss can be absorbed by other investment income.

Point #2. You are right.
