I have an 02 and was thinking of upgrading to the Stop Tech Big Brake Kit. Does anyone have experience with this product, good or bad?

You will be amazed. I put just the fronts (all 4 are on now) on my 2001 for Viper Days at Putnam Park. WOW is all I can say.

JonB at PartsRack can fix you up.

My four wheel kit just went on. I'll let you know what I think after the weekend.

I did front only on my 02 GTS.

You won't notice much difference in stopping distance, but you will notice a big difference in pad life.

Also my ABS tends to get activated more often. I presume this is because the StopTech set-up results in relatively more rear brake bias.

Tom,
I'm looking forward to seeing you and your buds as well. But you're too kind...I'm sure you'll not have any trouble being up front but I promise to feed the squirrels well so they'll try to keep you at least somewhat interested.

Regards the Stoptechs they seem to work fine with very little fade on track reported to be ******* brakes. Downhill braking after long straights. Did not use pads that came with set but rather race pads.

Cheers,
Jim

I purchased the stop tech big brake kit 1 year ago , it has probably been the best modification I have made to my viper (I have made a lot) . I drive the car on the street as well ad the track and the brakes have been flawless. I have used brembo brakes on a previous race car and the stop techs have the same or better quality with a lower price, and excellent customer support. I think West coast viper has a special going on them.

I just had comp coupe brakes put on my 2000 GTS by Ted at Valaya racing, this setup puts the stoptech system to shame. Ted also put in an on / off switchable ABS so you can still trail brake at the track with ABS off or stop fast on the street in full control even in the rain.

Parking brake can only work with 19 inch wheels, so I elected to go with a ral whell line lock so race tires can go on the car with 18 inch wheels. Ted's comp coupe brake package is around $4500. but call him for an exact # as mine was the ginea pig car and thing may have changed up or down in price.

The car is a 2000 so no existing antilock, the antilock is a $2K option with Ted, but pretty trick so what the hell!

Steve, I'm assuming Ted put new knuckles on as part of the swap, right? I had spoken with him about this last fall when he was working on a swap kit, but I thought it was an SRT setup--is there any difference between the brakes on the SRT and the ones on the Comp Coupe (other than pads)?

Ronnie,

The housings/calipers are the 04 red SRT but the inner pieces are the comp coupe equipment and are different than the SRT/10 brakes, the callipers are exactly the same between the two but I prefer the poser look of the red callipers.

The $2K is an additional for the ABS option on top of the price for the brake cost and yes new steering nuckles are part of the job and handling is greatly improved over stock and the dyno tuned penske 3 ways TEd put on don't hurt the handling either.

I spoke to Ted yesterday. Sounds like a fantastic upgrade.
You can put ABS on non-ABS cars. He uses a standalone controller. Didnt ask if it was Chrysler or ???

The Upgrade also has some tertiary benefits, like reduced bump-steer, and the ability to dial in more rear camber if wanted. One thing I also like is that consumables (comp coupe rotors) are a little over 100 bucks a wheel. About half of my current setup. I dont know if there is a reduced cost for pads.

The ability to turn ABS on or off is also a plus. Small, windy tracks would benefit from ABS (in my opinion) while longer faster tracks with mainly sweepers wouldnt.

He is also going to see if the upgrade will fit under 17 inch wheels, for us guys (him included) that have many sets of purners in the garage. Right now he has verified 18's with a parking brake mod required. He believes 17's will work with some machine work.

I think he may have something to see at VOI, for the guys going. Dont hold me to that though...

18 inch wheels will work on the Gen III car with a bit of modification to the e-brake caliper, very simple.

Stoptech rotors will save a nice amount of weight, and are very expensive. Perforated is not of choice for track guys, and this was from the horses mouth, Stoptech, slotted is preffered.

As far as rotational weight savings, well it's there, but not so much benifit as if it were on the outermost of the rotor.

Check out the projects page on my site about the all aluminum rotors. I will market these very soon, and the weight reduction is great. They will have a steel friction surface on them, and will not warp, or fail as they have been tested exstensively. www.provipermods.com

ps, John, whats the deal on reducing bump steer? Does the Viper produce much of it on lift, and how are the rotors a factor. Fill me in please...

Skip,
I wont attempt to relay Ted May's explanation in the interest of NOT confusing anyone. There are other modifications (steering rack) that affect handling. I assume that this is required with the ABS upgrade??? I would highly suggest you give him a jingle at his shop. Valaya Racing I believe (google it and his site comes up).

Sorry to dig up a semi-old thread but did you get the Stoptech kit yet? If not, I would recommend looking into Tom's rear caliper upgrade. A lot of good things have been said about it and not one bad report yet. I'm going to get it for my RT/10.

I heard a rumor that Stoptech has stopped building consumables for Vipers. If there is any truth to that I'll have to find another rotor to work with my Stoptech calipers.

Chuck, It's rumored that Coleman produces the rotors for Stop Tech so the consumables are still available. If you send them a rotor they will make you a duplicate. Last time I checked for a rotor to fit the 6-Piston caliper I run the cost for a rotor was under $200 :)
