strange electrical and starting issues in my 06 Viper

Hi guys,

I have some strange issues with my 06 vert and hpe one of you can shed some light.

1) I have strange starting issues. Sometimes my cars starts normal but now more frequently when I push the start nothing happens (keeping button pressed) and all of a sudden after a few seconds the motor runs without making cranking noise. When this happens I think there is a huge power drain to the engine and the odometer resets itself to zero.

2) From time to time when I open the door and the car wakes up or switch off ignition I hear a rattling noise comming from behind the dashboard (I think from behind the radio or climate control). It is there for a few seconds and then stops. It sounds like a fan hitting a wire or a stepper motor that is malfunctioning.

Not sure about the rattling noise, but the starting issue is probably battery related. Is it the original battery? A old battery that is on its way out does some funny stuff. There are a lot of posts with electrical issues that are usually cleared up with a new battery. I would start there.

Definitely battery related. Mine does same thing which means its time for a new battery.

My '06 would do the same thing (reset trip and not start) only when I didn't push the start button down all the way and hold it there until the motor started. Took me some time to figure out it was an operator problem...

Check battery cables, battery negative to frame connection, and engine ground strap connection. If all are OK, its likely the battery. The intermittent nature however points to a loose cable, unless the intermittent issues are relative to the time between starts.

Guys,

Both problems are solved! I changed my MOPAR acid battery for an optima AGM battery. It now cranks perfect and a lot stronger.

The 2nd problem with the rattling noise under the dash was the RB3 nav radio. When you unlock the car or open the door it accesses the CDrom to verify it is inside or not. Well after disassembling I fond out ne of the plastic wormwheels was partly stripped. I ordered a new drive mechanism. When it arrivés I will install it in the RB3 and everything is as it was then.

Hi all,

I am having exactly the same starting issues on my 2006 (bone-stock).
But one thing I'm sure is that I have it only when the engine is warm.
Unfortunately I am not using the car so often (say once every 2/3 weeks) and never had any issue the first time I start it when cold, but almost always have it re-starting when warm. And, yes: the odometer resets on mine too.
Strange thing is that after some time since I push the button (say one second) and nothing at all happens (only relay click), then the engine fires up all of a sudden, with no hesitation at all, exactly like when cold after weeks of rest.
When I bought the car in February 2014 the battery was still the original one and of course it died after like 2 or 3 starts and I had it changed, so I would say it is pretty new (8/9 months) and I had the issue from the beginning. One thing to say is that I don't know (I didn't check) which battery they put in: they say it's the "recommended" one, whatever this means... I understand some of you say that the battery make/type counts, but... why only when warm? and why after some weeks the engine fires so good? that makes me think that the battery may not be the cause, together with the fact that, as said, it is not that old and did it from immediately...

My 06 had the same problem. I replaced the ASD relay and it fixed my problem. A 12.00 part and plugs into the fuse box under the hood.

I'll try that.
I guess I can just pull it and go to whatever spares shop, finding Viper parts is almost impossible here in Europe, I hope this is just a "common" relay...

@Corrado.SV, where are you located in europe? I live in Antwerp (Belgium). If you cannot source Viper parts I have a few good dealers who can help out. Autohaus Höllerich in Helmbrechts (Germany) is very good and professional. Helmut, the owner, is a big Viper enthousiast itself and has a lot of knowledge. You can find them on www.viperteam.de

It is a very common Bosch relay. The other thing to do is mark the top of that relay so you can identify it and switch with one of the other relays on the fuse panel. There are 6 or more relays that have the exact same part number stamped on them in the fuse panel. You can get the same effect as having a new one by swapping it around. Pick one of the relays that doesn't get used regularly. I believe the horn relay is one of them.

Dear RolandDV and steve911, thanks a lot for your tips.
I will try swapping relays first, that sounds like a good idea, I didn't know there were more than one of the same code.
If that is a common Bosch part I think I can find it.
By the way RolandDV: I live in Monaco MC, but I have my parents in Italy, so I can try some good spares shop in Italy first, if the "swapping test" will work fine. But good to know we have "a friend" in Germany.

@Corrado.sv, .... I frequently visit Monte Carlo so maybe we cna meat one time. During the summer I am mostly in St Jean Cap Ferrat.
