I just purchased a 99 viper, which is being shipped to me. It is black with factory stripes. I want to remove the stripes. Are they painted or stickers? If they are stickers are they clear coated over with the paint?

Why in the hell did you buy a striped car to begin with? Why didn't you buy a non striped black car instead? Doesn't make any sense to me, black/silver stripes is one of the best combo's right behind steel grey/silver stripe but to each his own.
BTW, they are painted on with clear coat over them so unless you are willing to spend big bucks on a re-paint, you are stuck with them! Good luck.

Thanks for the infor. I got this one, because it is a RSI twin turbo viper. I wanted to actual re-stripe it with red. Black with red stripes. I will just leave it alone for now.

Did you check to see how many were made with your combination in 99 from the factory?

I'd keep it the way you bought it.

You can paint over the factory stripes. I suggest searching for pics of a red striped Black GTS because I think I saw pics of one.

Yuck. But that's just my opinion.

Jim, easier to change stripe color than to add stripes. I had my black stripes repainted to silver.

Black with red stripes look very good. A guy out here has a Gen IV with that combo and it looks great, good luck, Mike

I was going to buy that car but you beat me to it! I remember when it was on eBay. You got a HECK of a deal on it according to what the seller stated he got.

Don't take the stripes off!! There aren't enough of them out there with silver stripes as it is!! It looks awesome.

I'd recommend going with vinyl stripes first, and then decide whether it is worth going through the hassle of getting the paintwork done.

What you need to do is flat black stripes in vinyl over the factory stripes. That will look so sick! I believe 6speed had it on his car. Very raw look.

How do you find out what your car's original color is? I have a 99 GTS ,red with silver stripes. I can feel where the stripe edge is..Does this mean they are vinyl? I cannot find any information as to production numbers, color etc...Why isn't there info on 99's?
Thanks

With the '99 info missing from the registry, how do we even know the true numbers:dunno:

Yes,that is frustrating when i cannot find any info about my 99 GTS. Why is it there is no info? Mine is red with silver stripes, but i have no idea if they are painted on after or original to the car. One post here said if painted they have an easily felt edge which mine does, but that is exactly why i figured they were vinyl. I love the stripes personally, but then again my 94 rt/10 doesn't have any stripes and i love it that way too. :dunno:

Still gives me chills when I see one like the above:D

For anyone who hasn't ever seen the cover of the Viper brochure that features the black GTS (think it was 99) it was one of the best I have ever seen.

And YES I am biased:rolaugh:

I'll let Ron take this one...

The body panels are completely painted with the base color and cleared, then the stripe outline is masked and the paint is lightly scuffed (not to primer). The stripe only is then painted and cleared. After the baking process the stripe is lightly sanded with 2500 grit paper and polished.

The step height in the stripe is defined by Dodge and intentional.
