Stryker Red @ B-J Auction in Palm Beach?

I was actually contacted by B-J a few days ago about consigning my car with them. The dates are April 12th to 15th and it's in Palm Beach, FL. Supposed to be one of the larger gatherings for B-J.

They charge an insertion fee of up to $1,200 and require that you get the car to them at your expense, which usually means another $1,000 or so to ship the car. They also take 8% of the hammer price as their cut, and the buyer has to pay an 8% premium over the hammer price.

So is this the right time? Will the vaunted Stryker Red GTS be able to pull in a cool MSRP+ or will it fizzle out at some ****** sub-$100K result? No way to know without rolling the dice, and that's exactly what it feels like I'd be doing if I consign with B-J. If the car hammers at anything under $135K I'd consider it a major f**kup, especially now that $150K is in play for a private sale...and I don't think it would hammer for $165K this year.

Speaking of a private sale, let me drop a line here and say if anyone reading this wants to buy my 2013 Stryker Red GTS - aka the hottest Viper that money can buy - then contact me on here. I have the nicest pics of the car and all that stuff, and all you need is $150K burning a hole in your pocket and the realization that you're not getting a Viper for any less unless you buy some salvage/lemon junker in black or white.

Tough call. On the one hand the fever is probably as good as it's going to get for several years with the recent closing of the plant and the car in the forefront of people's minds. However, that being said, Vipers have never seemed to do terribly well at auctions. Seems like there just aren't as many really devoted bidders to drive the price up. I'm sure long term they would probably continue to increase in price, but I have no idea what that timeline would be.

Although your target buyer is the high roller that might be at a B-J auction; I think that the likelihood of him being at any specific one of their auctions at the same time as your car is there is low. I don't think that you would like the odds, if they were calculable.

On one hand, I feel like most people who see this car in person and are in the market for some type of nice car will strongly consider buying it...but on the other hand, I've watched older B-J auctions where brand new 2018-2019 vettes are bid up over $1M (for charity) but the Viper was only able to net $300K. Could just be a time and place thing, but that's a pretty big discrepancy.

Not sure why people are so reluctant to buy a Viper. Maybe the reputation it has for being difficult to drive/handle? I was actually getting tired of all the attention this car draws when I would take it out. It's neat at first but after a while it gets old really fast.

I've never quite understood why they don't get the same kind of press since they are just as capable if not more than many other high performance cars. People just seem to like to rag on them and think they are too "rough". It can destroy track records everywhere and they'll still say it's a bad car because it's not comfortable to them. I think a lot of reviews go in thinking it's bad to start with because of its old reputation so they rarely see how much better it truly has gotten, they just focus on what hasn't changed (like it being a raw driving experience). I suppose it's good for some though. I meant I could get one at a reasonable price compared to many other low volume high performance cars. I think they made roughy twice as many Ferraris every year compared to Vipers, and the Viper hangs with it or beats it just fine on the track and has one about half to a third of the price tag.

Well, after some deliberation I decided to go ahead with this and enter my SR GTS to the Palm Beach auction. They won't let me put a reserve on the car because it's only for cars with an estimated value of $150K, and they're estimating mine to be $100K or so "realistically", so whatever... I figure if I'm going to part with this awesome car, may as well do it with some fanfare. Plus, I heard Palm Beach is nice this time of year.

Comps for previously sold Gen 5 GTS at B-J auctions:

A white 2014 GTS sold for $99K in Scottsdale 2016.

Unless both of these buys were made by shills, it seems like it is possible to fetch decent results with B-J, bearing in mind that the buyer had to pay a 10% premium on each of those, so they essentially sold for $109K and $108K respectively at a time when one could simply have bought them new for A LOT less brand new from a dealer. Red is the most common Viper color, and I don't think white is too far behind. The only thing both of these cars had going for them was very low miles, like under 500.

Do you have some inside info that you aren't sharing or am I missing something here?

Just a little update....wow...after my car got it's lot assignment, which I am assured is fantastic and one of the best lot assignments of all assignments, I start getting people contacting me left and right offering my ask price of $150K or close to it - but they all need "a few weeks to get the money together". How shady is that shit?

Some old fart probably got his old clunker...i mean "classic"...bumped out of that spot by my car and wants me to pull mine from the auction, so they pose as a potential buyer in an effort to get me to pull my car and hold it for direct sale. No deal, suckas. You want to buy, you best have the money in hand or ****! Nobody cares about your 19xx-whatever polished ****-o-mod anyway. hah!

Guys, if you do these auctions and have a semi-hi profile car you're going to get trolled by these morons. Watch out! Sabotage attempts and likely more fraud abound!

Was kinda thinking the same thing. Out of all the cars/trucks listed at the auction, how would one filter it down to one car that may have bumped someone from the auction. Does BJ publish a list showing who, what and why?

It has nothing to do with my car, it's about the assigned lot. There are limited lots, and the lot you aer assigned determines which group of cars yours will be rolled over the stage with as well as the date and approximate time. To get the best results at B-J or any such auction, you'll need your car to be assigned a prime time spot appropriate to its value.

People who get early morning spots, late night spots, or spots that group them with cheaper cars tend to get sub-par results...so they may go down the list and troll anyone who was already assigned a good spot in an attempt to get them to stay out of the auction altogether...at which point that assignment opens up, potentially for their car.

There are shops all over the country whose business model revolves around restoring a car and unloading it at BJ or mecum for a premium, vs what they'd get selling it directly.

My self, I would not put my car up with out a reserve, for me to risky, yes all it takes is two rich guys who want the same car and your good to go, but if you have no one at that time interested in your car you will take a beating, I have seen awesome cars go for next to nothing if there are no hot buyers at the time.

B-J is not a good place to sell a car unless you're part of their inner circle and this proves it.

Sure, $84K was a disappointing result and B-J definitely rushed it over the block without even mentioning it's main selling points...but you seem to be confused my butthurt friend, you could not have bought it from me for any price because I would not sell it to a **** like you. Your last chance was to bid at BJ and you didn't.
