Sorry, but ANY car thats has a total production run in lots of less than 5000 units per year should automatically be excluded from any and all of this Govt. controlled BULL****. There is not enough of them on the road to make ANY impact at all, but while they are at it they are absolutely crushing an entire market that employs a lot of people [and probably keeps many others from going postal!]

I agree, although that's just a loophole begging to be abused. GM will create Hummer 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3... all under 5000 units, all with the only difference being some cosmetic and bolt on engine parts. I wouldn't mind either way, that'll be the govt's reason for not allowing this.

....I'm afraid the days of driving are coming to an end. It's already effecting us all - you can't even enjoy the back roads anymore unless you have an attorney on retainer and bail money in your wallet. I went back wards and bought a Gen1 just for this reason. It's a drivers' car that heals my soul every time I get in it. I come out soaked in sweat, smelling like exhaust and physically exhausted. My ACR is a dream on the track and effortless to drive fast; it's very sedate on the street. I love them both for different reasons - point: they all have big red targets painted on them. Weather you like the old school driving experience of the Gen1 or the sewing machine perfection and precision of the Gen4 - we may all not have the choice for very much longer...

Easy fix- base it on PLATFORM, rather than nameplate. A manufacturer isn't going to engineer 100 different platforms to use it as a loophole- they could never afford it. So to that effect, you could not use the "Magnum" platform like the Charger/300/Challenger/etc and produce a variant under 5K units, as the platform itself is WAAY over 5000/yr. However, the Viper, ZB, would easily fall into that category.

That is exactly true. I've always wanted a sports car catagory defined that would exclude sports cars from the government bs, but the 5000 unit rule would accomplish the same results. Something like that would create small independent auto manufacturers and more jobs as well as increase kit car sales.

It's already happening Chuck.. more boutique auto companies are starting up lately. Looking back at Detroit, historically there were over 200 car companies from the early 1900s to the 40s, from small garage builders to Packards, etc.. obviously many didn't survive.. yet this time around it's developing around the globe.. due to the plentiful resource of off-the-shelf parts, offshore / low cost parts, reduced upfront tooling costs, existing chassis components, powertrains, etc.. should be interesting to see what the auto industry is going to be comprised of in 10 years..

I'm not very worried. HP has been around forever. Losers telling the rest of us what to do has been around since Kings. Instead of allowing less and less hp we're getting more and more hp.

Can anyone truly see Obama or Canada's PM telling North American Companies that they have to let the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans be the ones building the faster cars? Although I can see England cancelling all of their performance cars that would only mean that those companies would move to another country. Italy and Germany won't allow cancellation of their supercar Industry and neither will North America.

If the Government said No faster to Dodge, they'd just continue building the aftermarket parts, cams, exhaust, controllers, etc and keep selling them to us. Many of us wouold buy a CC/race crate engine for our street cars and others (like me) would keep installing Forced Induction.

I'd say that if the Government told Dodge to stop it would just mean that there would be more tuner cars on the road.

Sport Compacts are a fine example. Not sure why anyone would want to build over 500rwhp from a baby engine, but they do.

I'd like to see it accelerated. For example, there are some terrific cobra kit companies building cars every bit as good as any of the big manufacturers but they are limited to 100 turnkey cars per year. If that number were bumped up to 5000 or even 2000 the market would really grow.

All true but there was also a 20-year lull. After setting the mark at 400hp in the 60s by 1976 the Vet had been castrated to what 140hp? The return to 400 was a long time coming. Now the mark is 600 and cars are under attack again. I don't think I can survive another 20 year stretch of dismal sportscars.

And you are a Viper commercial Mike. Having access to all types of sprots cars and one offs as well intimate knowledge of the Vipers complete build info - that you chose a Viper is a compliment to the rest of us who also chose a Viper for ourselves!

Chcuk you won't have to go another 20 years being castrated ... you already own a Viper. You may have to rebuild your beast a few times instead of buying a new one is the only difference.

Well, how do we form a group to lobby Washington?

The Viper crowd in and of itself would be far too small, but if we included the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Corvette, Mustang, ricer, etc., crowd, you might, in theory, have enough people to make a decent-sized lobby group.

We agree on many things, but on this one we disagree. Clarkson and staff have, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head. We are at a "high" for performance, luxury and safety. The overall climate of change, however, shows that such great performing cars are coming to an end. I have sadly seen it in my business. Research and development is way down. Anything that is going to be made will be simply boring. It is very sad. The change has happened, but the economic pressures will take some time before finally taking their toll. GM......bankrupt. Chrysler....bankrupt. Cars like the Aston will simply no longer be made, although they are great. We have seen the top of a peak. Electric cars are coming. Econobox styling is back. The beauty of the automobile will be compromised. The passion is dying. We live in changing times. Sometimes change is not good.
