After looking at other SRT products, it is really disappointing that they didn't do something completely unique for the Viper. I know the tach is unique, but I guess I just liked the gauges that were in the Gen IV....

throw up the dash with the Stryker display and reconsider!!! Then again, red lining at 9000 RPM's is pretty cool though. Damn you Ferrari. hee hee

Believe the reason for the digital dash is to give additional information to the driver. You can choose many different modes to vary the information you wish to be displayed, and change the emphasized parts of the display for different driving circumstances.

Physical gauges are much less flexible, weigh more, cost more and require more complex wiring looms.

I also agree though, Ferrari makes some of the most emotionally involving gauge packages.

I agree that the shift light is cool, but I like an actual tachometer. The digital pieces could have been adjacent to the tach which would allow for the flexibility Paul was mentioning.

My issue with the electronic and digital on new cars (not just Vipers) is, if they go out, will you know your speed, mileage, data, to even drive to get them repared? And, when the car is out of warranty, look out! And, 40 years from now, will these even be repairable at all?

I'm no engineer or race car professional, but I would rather have a V10 that does not have to work it's ass off to achieve peak power. JMO I guess. I have never been impressed with high RPMs, just actual race track performance and Ferrari does not shine on a track. The GEN V (as ****ty as you guys think it is) beats the 458 around Laguna and probably Nurburgring (If Chrysler ever takes it there.). Just my thoughts.

Exactly what I was saying above that I would've liked. Give me a real tach and the rest can be digital for all I care as long as it looks the part.

Its funny, that was my EXACT question to the SRT Engineer I
had when I test drove the GenV. He completely dismissed my
concern. Its my ongoing issue with SRT - I can't help but feel
that we mortals are incapabile of understanding of top-notch
engineering involved. Besides, how could we possibly know
what we want in a car anyway...

I did have a brief conversation with... someone else at VOI
regarding the gauges and he/she said that analog might be a
consideration on non-gts models someday, but not to get my
hopes up...

jsd i dont think that the gen V is ****ty; i'm building one as i type this.;)

as for digital dash, push to start, etc, there's a big concern in having that technology out of warranty. luckily i change cars every 2-3 years so its a non issue for me as once the warrnty is gone usually the car is as well.:smirk:

In 40 years, you will be able to run the engine and any gauges you like off a chip the size of a stamp.
You can rip the old failed dash out and bin it. Replace it all with new kit the same way people replace the old 60's stuff in pro touring etc.

The engine management will also be able to be cheaply replaced.

Agreed. The speed gauge looks like it has been taken from a 1990s minivan. The set up on the Ferrari is obviously top notch but I wonder what the cost is.

So true. So very, very true. They already manipulate people into purchasing a POS they'd never even consider if only the manufacturers had the freedom to build cars from their creative minds as opposed to the restrictive government regulations.

I saw on Topgear that in the 458 you can not display the NAV and the speed at the same time...... Fail.

The analog speedo can be displayed on the right or the left, depending on what else you have displayed on the other. One cool thing you can do is have the NAV on the right and speedo on the left and use the NAV zoomed in as a guide on how tight upcoming turns are when you are unfamiliar with the road, on spirited driving excursions. You can also display various other driving stats. What is nice is that they are right in front of you instead of having to look down and to the center. its a very nice set up once you get used to it.
