What the..
Remster, you paid $150K for the custom paint job and it doesn't go past the doors? From the back, it looks stock red.

put it in that light, yeah I do feel stupid.
There are some very faint flames leaching all the way back. Lassen stopped the flames just short of the gas cap to avoid any explosions.

But it's a collector item. The price of the paint itself is probably less that $200 total. That's not the rational behind it. The material for Picasso or Van Gogh's paintings didn't cost much as well... but nobody's gonna sell their art for the cost of material.

Interesting side note, I visited a Lassen gallery in Las Vegas, in Forum Shops, Caesars Palace. There was a Ferrari 348 painted blue and green with dolphins all over on display there. I have pictures of it, and it's not, well, it's not good. I also saw a picture of a Lamborghini Diablo in his gallery with the same treatment. I just have to say, I'm not a big fan of liberal-environmentalism and this is, simply put, an adultery. This is not a personal attack on Lassen or remster, because I personally feel, without the dolphins on the Viper, the flames would be sweet. I just don't see the logic in painting sea creatures on beautiful pieces of automotive art (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Viper). BTW, comparing Picasso and Van Gogh to Lassen is like comparing a Dusenberg straight 8 to a 3 cylinder Chevy Metro. Leave the dolphins to canvas and cars to PPG. Good luck on your selling, though; I cannot imagine the stress you're going through.

Regards

Out of respect for the models, I couldn't post the pics under the foul and offensive heading above... discussion on mods in the form of artwork is under the new topic "Vipers & Artwork"

You know I thought I had heard it all. I can't tell you how many people have raised the "can you beleive how much Bill Gates is spending on his new house 10 years ago" question - since I am a computer guy too.

LISTEN. Mr. Gates spent less than 1.7% of his annual income (whatever year it started) on the TOTAL cost of the house. Do you like his house? Who knows? Who Cares? It was a small expense relatively speaking.

$150k for a paint job, well I wouldn't, but if you were worth $100 mil. (no really think about it) would you even think twice? It [was] no big deal.

Enough Monday morning quarter-backing.

I hate the paint. BUT, if I had made it up to $100M I would have done it (painting the car however I wanted). As it is I think the frost on my hood is cool - a a lot less expensive.

Remster - wouldn't you agree this was a discretionary expense that at the time was a non-issue, but now seems like a drunken night out in the wrong part of town?

Sowhat.

But, I would agree with the person who suggested you replace the parts and sell it as stock. A Viper hood on the wall actually looks really cool.

Had to sell the F50 first because that was the most expensive one and the money went to pay some boat repairs... and that boat is sold too, at big loss.

I painted the viper because I didn't want the 2 italian cars to dwarf it. And now trust me, the diablo and F50 didn't get half the attention of the lassen viper, so mission was accomplished.

Unfortunately, stories like this aren't uncommon these days. I have alot of friends that took a "paper worth" and leveredged it into massive debt that couldnt be paid off when the stocks tanked. AOL, UUNET, WorldCom, PSI - all places where friends had significant wealth created by the paper given to them. But today most are broke (or worse) and are back to living in an apartment and looking for work.

What should have concerned these people (and, I might add, they laughed at me when I tried to point it out to them) was that the valuations their stock had was so out-of-control that there was no way a market correction wouldnt occur (however, i didnt have a crystal ball to tell them when). Priceline had a higher valuation than all of the airlines combined - yet they only sold the tickets onto those airplanes. But they had NO ASSETS! In fact, Priceline made its money by issueing paper to the airlines in exchange for tickets that it would then "sell" to the people on its site. Can anyone explain how that business model create that kind of supportable valuation? It can't and it didn't.

I also had a significant paper worth - and not that long ago. Even hit in the 8 figures. But most of my stock was locked up with 144 rules. I had opportunities to leveredge (or margin) the stock - lord knows there are lots of guys pounding on your door tring to convince you to do it - but I knew it was just asking for trouble.

The downturn significantly reduced by paper worth - but heck, I never had the money in the first place - right? So, having not spent it has saved me from losing even more. And I guess I wont be retiring at 37 like I had hoped; but, what the heck, I'm young and have plenty of time to try and make it back.

I think it is overly optomistic to think that a market like this will occur again and we can all look forward to 9 digit portfolios as long as we "work hard". I think that history will prevent this from happening for a long time.

But, Vipers and Flames aside - this story is a good lesson in what to be careful of and what warning signs you should look out for.

And you'll find plenty of assets like this on the auction block as many of these guys spent their money on the oddest of things. Not to mention alot of divorces where trophey wives are finding they actually ended up with half of nothing.

well, for those who read my rant about getting rich, the purpose I set myself is to motivate kids to do the right thing to be decent and successful human beings.
A lot of them drool over my car and send me emails, and I wanted to do something positive and funnel their energy into something that would help them later in life.
The carrot of getting rich is a lame ploy to capture their interest. And as I said, you need luck, not just hard work and smarts. Without luck it takes a lot time.

re-babes & vipers: xtrmbikini, you have nothing to fear competition-wise from my corner... as my French friend likes to say "je suis un infame vermiceau rampant par terre".
I checked out your site, and I'll say there a lot of nice things to see there :)

re-ripping the hood off the car: all of you who only saw pics just can't properly assess the car. When you see it in person it's another story. I like RainFall's comment about Yin/Yang. The balance of opposits. If you read Kipling's IF poem at the end of my rant, this poem is in a way an encouragement to find balance.
Those who hate the dolphins will some day mellow out to appreciate that.

Here's one behind the scene pic I think is safe to show until I get the all clear signal

Might as well do my own ranting.. since the post has shot itself to hell.

1) I hate newbies. I hate them because they come fresh out of their "be an NT4 MCSE in 2 weeks" boot camps with their little certs in hand expecting to make 65K a year start. Man I hate that crap! A year ago, you could make 100K a year if you knew how to stick tag lines into HTML and make install scripts
dead.gif

You don't know how many newbies, be they 18 or 38, who i've been assigned to "show the ropes" and all they freak out because the real world isn't a classrom sim. 9 times out of 10... Certifications out the yin-yang, but no people skills or experience actualy DOING something. Sheesh
frown.gif

2) I hate Lotus. Lotus can burn... and burn hard. Who the hell wrote notes? R4 *****... R5 is a bit weird. Domino? bah. Don't get me started on the whole smart suite deal....

3) Watching the bulls n' bears fight it out now is truely sad... flat lines accross the board. Sigh.. once uppon a time JDSU made me money, but now? Nope... can't even get a decent days haul out of it anymore. Short selling is the root of all evil! That and when your cable goes out when your sitting on the Island trading live.. that ***** too!

4) Buggy software. Why? WHY? Why can't someone take 2 seconds out of their day to put a tag line in the code? Come now.. would a remark truely hurt you to let the rest of the teams know what the hell you are doing? Sheesh... some of this crap is like deciphering japanese in brail!

5) Microsoft reps... they are bill gate clones. If I hear one more word about how "spectacular" XP is going to be, I'm going postal.

Ok.. I'm about done. I've got 4 more days until I go to Disney World...
I'm seriously considering brining a case of Shiner Bock to work tommorow!
